Cell Analogy Poster

Now that you have learned about the organelles in a cell, you need to think of an analogy, comparing the cell and it’s organelles to something of your choice, like a school, supermarket, playground, etc. Then, create a poster to clearly illustrate your analogy.

Example Analogy:

The Cell as a Factory

The Cell as a Factory: Note that this is not complete and only has a few organelles included.

Factory Part / Function in a Factory / Organelle / Function in the Cell
Central Office / Manages activities, initiates production, controls activities of factory / Nucleus
Assembly Line / Ribosome / Assembles amino acids to manufacture proteins
Packaging & Shipping / Packs products for distribution
Generator / Mitochondrion
Storage area / Stores materials for later use / Vacuole

Create Your Own Analogy

1.  Choose ONE type of cell (plant or animal) and think of your analogy (like a school, supermarket, playground, etc. - YOU MAY NOT DO A FACTORY LIKE THE EXAMPLE.) Make a rough draft of your chart and check off each organelle as you add it in your chart:

Plant Cell

 Nucleus  Mitochondrion

 Cell wall  Cell membrane

 Chloroplast  Ribosomes

 Golgi body  Endoplasmic reticulum

 Vacuole  Cytoplasm

Animal Cell

 Cytoplasm  Lysosomes

 Ribosomes  Mitochondria
 Nucleus  Cell Membrane

 Golgi Body  Endoplasmic Reticulum
 Vacuole

2.  Sketch a rough draft of your analogy so it includes each item from your chart.

  1. Produce your final product on paper approximately 17 x 22” (side-by-side pieces of white unlined paper or similar sized poster paper). Make a neatly labeled and colored picture of the analogy you are comparing your cell to. Use a ruler to make your chart or prepare the chart on your computer.
