CAVALIERS QUALIFIES 5 INDIVIDUALS AND 1 RELAY TO NCHSAA 2A OUTDOOR STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

DETERMINED TO KEEP

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS STREAKS ALIVE

Largely due to the success achieved in the hurdles and jumps, Cummings boys and girls have experienced an unmatched amount of success at NCHSAA track and field state championships. With a state record 19 NCHSAA state championships for the girls and this year’s 1A/2A/3A Indoor Championship for the boys, Cummings will, as always, be expected to be a factor at Fridays 2A State Championships. If this year’s group of 3 boys and 5 girls perform as expected Cummings will add to their state championship legacy.

STATE RECORD STREAKS

Streak 1 - Individual State Championships

At the 1992 Indoor State Championships, Fred Gant, running in the slow section, won Cummings’ 1st indoor championship when he captured the 2 miles run title. At the Outdoor Championships the same year, he won the 3200 meters run. At this year’ 1A/2A/3A NCHSAA Indoor State Championships, Isaiah Moore won the high jump and 55 meter hurdles. Every year in-between, a Cummings athlete has won at least 1 individual NCHSAA state championship. The streak will be furthered this Friday if performances go according to plans at the 2A State Championships.

With 7 individuals entering the State Championships ranked in the top 3 chances are more than good that Cummings will leave Friday’s meet with more championships to add to the streak.

Streak 2 – Hurdles State Championships

The 2nd streak began the following year when DeAnne Davis won the 60 yards hurdles at the 1993 NCHSAA Indoor State Championships. DeAnne went on to win 3 more Indoor State Championships and 8 Outdoor Championships in her career. Once she graduated in 1996, no one imagined that the championship habit that she established would still be alive 20 years later. With Lisa Bradsher, Deidre Mapp, Antonio King, Michael Hinton, Michael Enzlow, Chandra Pulliam, Dominique Price, Damien Burton, Latoya James, Dontae Wooden, Sherice Walker, Kortney Williams and Francesca Evans, Jonathan Watlington, Thomas Jones II and Isaiah Moore doing the work, Cummings has produced at least 1 NCHSAA track & field hurdles state champion each year since 1993. With Isaiah and Thomas placing 1st and 2nd and winning 5 championships at the past 3 NCHSAA State Championships, they are established as North Carolina’s best, regardless of classification and are expected to further Cummings hurdles legacy. With Samirah’s and Ro’Daijah’s high rankings, don’t bet against a 1st place finish for them also.
