COURSE DESCRIPTION/GOALS:

This course is designed to enable residents to obtain an understanding of the pharmacology of the most commonly prescribed medications; pharmacotherapeutic concepts in relationship to disease pathophysiology; rational drug therapy in the treatment of disease; drug-drug interactions and drug-disease interactions; adverse drug events. Residents will be expected to apply information on disease pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy to clinical practice

OBJECTIVES:

1.  Discuss treatment and pathophysiology of disease states presented in this course.

2.  Select the appropriate agent for a given patient and disease state

3.  Recognize drug-disease and drug-drug interactions and adverse effects of medications

4.  Assess the effects of age, race, and various disease states on the patients response to therapy.

COURSE FORMAT: Lectures, clinical cases, written exam

COURSE GRADING:

The responsibility of assigning grades rests exclusively with the course director. Course grades are reported to the Registrar of the School at the end of the course or when a final grade has been determined. The course grades will be based on one written examination. The written examination will consist of multiple choice questions based on selected readings, handouts, and class discussions.

The letter grade for this course is as follows:

A 90-100 %

B 80-89%

C 70-79%

D 60- 69%

Failing Below 60%
