Peli de Halleux, Senior Research Software Developer Engineer, Microsoft Research
Today, it is all about smart phones and mobile applications. Many of our students already have a smartphone and spend an incredible amount of time on them. Instead of creating applications, students spend much of their consuming applications. Unlike the first computers decades ago which would invite the user with a BASIC prompt, today’s smart phones are a closed castles which only professional developers know how to program. A year ago, researchers at Microsoft Research decided to bring back the joy of programming for smartphones and that is how TouchDevelop evolved. TouchDevelop is a mobile application development environment that runs on the Windows Phone. No personal computer is required as everything happens on the phone itself. Through TouchDevelop, any user can easily edit and share scripts that leverage all the sensors, data connection and rich graphics of the phone.
Jonathan "Peli" de Halleux is actively working on TouchDevelop, Moles and Pex… or shooting videos for Channel9. Peli joined the Research in Software Engineering group at Microsoft Research in October 2006. Peli worked in the CLR as a SDET in charge of the Just In Time compiler (2004-2006). Before joining Microsoft, Peli earned a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the Catholic University of Louvain in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium (2000-2004).

Andrew Craswell
Bellevue College
Andrew Craswell is a recent University of Washington transfer-student from both Olympic College and Bellevue College. He is actively pursuing a B.S. degree in computer science with an economics minor. At the same time he works as a part-time, permanent Applications Developer for Bellevue College, implementing, maintaining applications used by, and providing solutions for, students and faculty alike. His interest in computer science began at the age of 11 when he began learning basic web development in his spare time. Andrew eventually decided to enroll in programming courses at Olympic College at age 14 to further explore his passion for computer languages.
In addition to enjoying programming on a daily basis, Andrew’s hobbies include hiking, politics, economics, airsoft, and fencing.

Eric Kong
Bellevue College
Eric Kong has been at Bellevue College since 2005. During his tenure at the college, he has filled a number of roles within the Information Resources division.
Eric started as a lab assistant in the campus’s main open computer lab, and then moved on as a Production Director at KBCS (Bellevue College’s radio station). In his position as IT Specialist III at Computing Services and Network Services and Security, Eric provides hardware, software and network support for the 2000+ machines used by the college’s students and employees.
Eric’s position requires a basic math background, a willingness to learn and employ new technologies, and most importantly, soft skills, as the majority of time is spent working with end-users. His degree in communications plays a major role in how information is created in his department and then disseminated to the rest of Bellevue College’s campus. Eric spends his free time illustrating, writing, and using wired gadgets to make noise. He is also a gifted director and cinematographer (he didn’t write this last sentence, but it’s true!)

His completed short term goals include: earning his two-year degree at Bellevue College in accounting and economics, and then earning his Bachelors of Arts in Business Management, Eastern Washington University, in 2012. Daniel is currently pursuing a Master’s of Science degree in Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington.
Throughout his academic pathway, Daniel has always worked in Information Technology positions assisting, guiding, and troubleshooting computer issues with his customers, whether they are students or company personnel. He has experienced how users can become incredibly frustrated with a button or looking for a menu options they cannot find. This has given him a great perspective of what a computer user experiences. His ultimate goal is to bring innovative ideas that can be seamlessly implemented and can contribute immensely to an excellent user-experience.
