During your first log-in, you will be given the opportunity to connect to LinkedIn, Internships.com, and College Recruiter and Snagajob; all of these can be helpful tools in your job or internship search. There will also be an opportunity to connect to a company-search feature of Facebook. If you elect not to make these connections at this time, you may do so later through My Connections in the drop down list under My Account.

Once you log in, your home page will appear. Navigating this page will allow you to view job and internship listings, post your resume for employer viewing, and access career advice.

NAVIGATING THE HOME PAGE

At the top of your home page, you will have access to links for My Account, Employers, Opportunities, and Career Events. You will also be able to view Announcements, which will include postings of upcoming events and job search tips posted by your Career Services office. On the left side of the screen, a menu provides shortcuts to Home, Calendar, Resource Library, Favorites, Partners, and The Campus Career Coach where you can find job search and career development tips. If you decide to save your search, a short-cut to Saved Searches will also appear in this area. On the right, information about your account and job listings from the Indeed job search engine will appear.

MANAGING YOUR ACCOUNT

Clicking on the My Account link at the top of your home page allows you to access information about your profile, documents, connections, and activities.

· Completing your profile. Selecting My Profile allows you to view, delete, change, or add to the information featured on your profile page. Spend some time developing a profile page that markets you well. Click on Edit Profile at the top of the page. You can now add and change information in the different categories. When you have completed your edits, be sure to click Save. Having a complete and up-to-date profile will market you better to employers. Note: Employers will only have access to your profile if you have checked “Yes” in response to the “Allow employer viewing” question in the Additional Information section at the bottom of the profile form.

· Uploading a resume. Selecting My Documents in the My Account menu allows you to upload your resume and cover letter for employers to see. Uploading your resume (be sure it’s a good quality resume) will allow interested employers to view it. When posting your resume for online viewers, it is often recommended for safety reasons that you omit your address, including just your email and telephone number for contact information. To add your resume, click the Add button next to the document name (Resumes or Cover Letter) on the bottom half of the page. You can then browse to attach the specific document. Once you post your document, action links will appear, allowing you to View, Update, Download, or Remove the document.

· Connecting with Resources. Selecting My Connections allows you to connect to your LinkedIn account or, if you haven’t yet developed a professional LinkedIn networking account, to develop such an account now. Finally, you will find links to Internships.com, College Recruiter, Indeed, Snagajob and LinkedIn; at these sites you can find job/internship postings and tips for streamlining and improving your job search.

· Monitoring activity. Selecting My Activity allows you to find out if employers have viewed your resume.

CHECKING OUT JOBS, INTERNSHIPS, AND EMPLOYERS

Clicking on the Employers link at the top of your home page brings up a page that allows you to search for employers. The basic search function allows you to search by employer name and/or city. The advanced search button allows you to search by more criteria.

Clicking on the Employment link under the Opportunities link at the top of your home page brings up a page that allows you to conduct job searches on CareerConnect, Internships.com, and Indeed.

· To do a basic search on CareerConnect, type in a keyword and/or position type, and click Search. Clicking on Advanced Search will allow you to apply more criteria to your search, such as a search for all accountant jobs in Wisconsin or all part-time jobs listed for liberal studies majors in Milwaukee. To do a search for jobs posted for your major, click on the Majors box, select the degree you are pursuing (i.e., undergraduate, associate, or graduate), then select your specific Major.

Note: It is advisable when searching for a position in a specific state to perform the State search using both the two letter abbreviation and the full state name, as employers may have entered it in either format.

· After conducting a search, the specific job postings that meet the criteria for your search will appear.

· You can save the search or request an email be sent to you when a new position meeting your criteria is listed. To do this, click “Save search” or “Email me new jobs,” which appear at the top of your search results list. If you save the search, a shortcut to the search results will appear in the Saved Searches on the left side of your home page.

· You can also perform job searches on the other sites by clicking on Internships.com and Indeed. After you select the site, a line asking you to specify type of job or company or location will appear immediately below. Enter your criteria in one or more boxes and click Search Jobs.
