CHNPC NEWSROUND

November 2014

Calling all members 13-25 years……

Do you enjoy all aspects of PC life? Would you like to become a volunteer actively giving your time helping others in the branch? If you have answered Yes to either question then the Young Equestrian Leaders Award (YELA) will help you to get going!

YELA is a new and exciting award that has been developed by Riding for the Disabled (RDA) for the British Equestrian Federation (BEF) in consultation with many of its Member Bodies to increase and encourage the number of young people volunteering in the Equestrian industry. The award is open to all young people between the ages of 13 and 25.

The award runs over three progressive levels that must be taken in turn: 20 hours for Bronze, Silver requires an additional 40 hours of volunteering plus having achieved the Bronze Award. The Gold Award requires 60 hours on top of achieving the Silver level.

To complete the Bronze award you must complete 20 hours of volunteering with at least one BEF member body, which can be our branch of The Pony Club (evidenced in your Bronze award log book). Once completed you will be asked to submit answers to the Bronze level questions, these are questions about your volunteering experience. The questions will reflect the places and activities during your volunteering experience. The Silver award requires that you volunteer with at least two BEF Member Bodies, for example the branch and Wilmslow Riding Club, the Gold requires hours for three Member Bodies, eg the branch, WRC and BE/BD or any other BEF member organisation.

In our branch at the moment we have Maia Hodgson working towards her Gold award, Lucy Pedley working towards her silver award and Kate Pedley working towards her bronze award. Georgina Hayward completed her Gold award and found it extremely useful. Not only does the scheme help you to develop an interest, it also contributes to your personal development if you then want to pursue the Young PC coaching pathway. Want to know more? Check out the YELA websitehttp://yela.org.uk. To register for the Bronze award is £14. You can register online. Alternatively contact Sarah Hodgson for more information; text/phone 07969008998 or email

MEMBERS’ NEWS

Half term is now over and Christmas is just round the corner!

We had an action packed half term…..

Friday 24th October 2014 saw the first of the branch Winter Dressage Series. Huntersgate was full of enthusiastic young dressage riders and what a great evening it was. There were very few older members at this competition however the standard was high!

Members competing in class 1a were riding for double rosettes as they were also being judged for the PC Riders Test. Members are judged purely on their riding alone; they are given a written sheet with constructive comments which will help them in future tests. Thank to Rob Gilsenan for judging this section and helping us to trial this.

Thanks also to Liz Sutton for organising a most enjoyable evening. Member Annabel Carthy joined us for the evening gaining valuable experience to help her for the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Annabel volunteered her help and wrote for the judge. Thanks Annabel. The next dressage competition is on Sunday 16th November 2014 at Huntersgate. The Dengie Dressage qualifier is also at this event. See the newsletter for more information.

On Saturday 25th October 2014 members took advantage of the invitation by Wilmslow Riding Club to join in their arena eventing training. Members enjoyed an opportunity to practice their arena eventing skills with Rob Gilsenan at Huntersgate, Byley. Members received instruction and finished their session jumping a course. Well done to all. It was most enjoyable to watch. Thanks to WRC for inviting members. This helps us to offer more opportunities for our members.

Sunday 26th October 2014 saw the Sir WWW’s Winter League show jumping competition at Southview. Another opportunity to compete for the branch in the Area 5 league was taken by mny and it was a very enjoyable day. The day ran smoothly and it was well run. Thank you to Sir WWW branch.

Class 1 saw 5 members jump for the branch. The Lions team of Ella Booth, Keira Booth, Emily Entwistle and Imogen Kennedy came a credible 4th with Imogen 5th individual and Ella 6th individual. Daisy Such made her debut for the branch on Misty. Thanks to Cheryl Booth for walking the course with the girls. We had a lovely morning and had to sample the chips in the café too!

We also had many representatives in all the other classes – pics and results to follow. Thanks to Loulie for organising the branch entries. Check out the future fixtures on the branch website.

On Tuesday 28th October we held a “Dressage explained” morning at Huntersgate. 9 members, all new to dressage, had an opportunity to ride through a dressage test with constructive advice how to improve their marks. Parents also practiced calling the tests for their children, unravelling the mysteries along the way! Members also were helped to prepare for the test, working on various movements. Each member rode through the test twice with improvements noted by all. We hope to see you all at the next branch dressage on Sunday 16th November.

Thursday 30th October saw 12 members enjoy a leisurely hack through the picturesque Delamere Forest. How lucky we are to have this fabulous forest on our doorstep. They all had great fun and finished the ride with lots of home made cake! Welcome to new member Joe who joined in the activity. Thanks to Julie Pedley for organising. The next fun hack will be the Christmas Tinsel & Glitter Fun ride on Friday 2nd January at Somerford Park Farm around the farm ride. See the newsletter for more details.

Area 5 members were invited to a Polocrosse training day by Celyn UKPA polocrosse club on Friday 31st October. Great fun was had and both experienced members and those new to polocrosse enjoyed the action packed training. Lucy O Toole, new to polocrosse, had a wonderful day and is well and truly hooked now! Kate Tranter, Lauren Miller and Emily Entwistle enjoyed the training too. CHNPC member Alex Vickers enjoyed the day on 2 levels; she was an instructor in the morning and enjoyed the advanced training in the afternoon. Alex has successfully gained her UKPA Umpire’s award this summer and will be at our December working rally sharing her expertise with branch members.

On Friday 31st October we had a spooktacular time at the frostbite show jumping. There were a variety of spooks, skeletons and witches in various guises! Along with the jumping we had apple bobbing and jelly babies in icing sugar, gingerbread spooks and sweets galore! The evening was FUN from the off and all had a great time. Thanks to Kate Pedley who came to help as part of the bronze YELA award and to Rob and Lucinda too. Thanks also to Julie for the apple bobbing and to Leo for the sweets and Mr Booth for the gingerbread spooks!

Saturday 1st November saw members enjoy the working rally at Huntersgate. It was an action packed rally with members studying for the B test to the E test. Kate and Lucy planned and delivered 2 most enjoyable and practical stable management sessions which saw members learning how to tie up their ponies safely and securely, learning parts of the saddle and bridle, identifying parts of the pony with the help of a model horse, in addition to recognising different emotions in their ponies’ faces. Thank you to you both – it was well planned and delivered.

The next working rally with stable management is on Saturday 6th December at Huntersgate. There will be a B test training session, a trimming and pulling demonstration by Xanthe for parents, polocrosse instruction, plus all other test related activities too. Get your entries in early to avoid disappointment.

Saturday 2nd November saw the final activity over half term which was another training opportunity at the invitation of Wilmslow Riding Club. 9 members joined in the Liz Lyonette show jumping clinic. All visibly improved during the sessions and Liz was most complimentary about the standard of riding on display as well as the turnout of members too. The next WRC session is Sunday 7th December. Contact Joan for availability.

What a busy half term we had! Well done to all our members and we look forward to seeing you all soon.
