North Shore Chapter  5

NOSH 20 NEWS

THE MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF APICS NORTH SHORE CHAPTER #20 – OCTOBER 2005

So, are there 5Ss
in VMI?
Many companies are aggressively implementing new concepts and processes both on the shop floor and in other key areas in their operation. These concepts and processes range from:
q  ERP Implementation / q  Lean Manufacturing
q  VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory)
q  New Product Introduction / q  Customer Relationship Management
A common thread, that is a foundation of all these systems and processes, is a solid 5S program. Dan Marino, Senior Partner of Marino Associates, LLC, will provide the attendees with insight into the steps that must be taken to implement 5S and ensure the success of your VMI program.
The use of VMI has gained acceptance in many industries. What was once thought of as an experiment has now become an accepted solution for dramatic improvements in Supply Chain Management--by replacing “expensive” inventory, with “inexpensive” information. The sharing of schedules, and implementation of such techniques as VMI, should help optimize Supply Chain Performance, but many companies have been disappointed with their results.
A recent Harvard University study on VMI systems found that implementation does not always return better results than a traditional supplier relationship. The study found that information precision and reliability, combined with an effective sharing mechanism, were the key factors in obtaining higher supply chain profits.1
So, how do you implement a successful VMI system? A 5S program can help. While the 5S principles
(1) The Effect of Information Precision and Information Reliability on Manufacturer-Retailer Relationships. Susan Cohen Kulp, Accounting Review, July 2002, Vol. 77, Issue 3, p. 653 / traditionally focus on the physical management of inventory, they can also be applied to the management of the flow of data required for successful VMI. (For more about our speaker, see page 4.) Be sure to register by the Friday, 10/7/05 deadline!

President’s Message

Dear Fellow APICS Members,
Welcome back to our Fall programs! We have a great bunch of speakers lined up for our dinner meetings this year. In addition, Certification Workshops will be in full swing shortly—don’t miss your opportunity to register.
The Northeast Supply Chain Conference was held from September 18-20, 2005, at the Sheraton in Framingham, Massachusetts. APICS North Shore Chapter #20, and the Purchasing Management Association of Boston, Inc., organized the Conference to provide leading edge workshops, motivational keynote speakers, and time to share challenges and successes with your colleagues. If you attended, help us plan for next year by submitting a survey, visit: www.nesupplychainconference.org.
The 2005 APICS International Conference and Exposition, October 16-18, has been relocated to Kansas City, Missouri, due to the unfortunate effects of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans. Regular registration has been extended to September 30, 2005. Visit: http://www.apics.org. The Certified Supply Chain Professional program will be launched in conjunction with the 2005 APICS International Conference and Exposition, October. This new program is designed for professionals interested in increasing their knowledge of supply chain management. Stay tuned for more details!
We encourage you to take advantage of all opportunities APICS has to offer. Visit: www.apics-northshore.org for local events and www.apics.org for national events.
Sincerely,
Kevin Burnell, President

Certification Corner

Each month in this section, we will feature five sample questions from one of the five modules in the CPIM Certification Program. For more information on the CPIM Certification process, call Rich Hopkins at 978-282-2339.
This month's questions are taken from the Detailed Scheduling and Planning module:
1. Increasing the capacity at an intermediate bottleneck work center results in all of the following EXCEPT
(A) an increase in the throughput of the system
(B) a decrease in work in process in the system
(C) a rescheduling of the existing load
(D) a reprioritization of existing queues
2. Providing insufficient capacity will result in a reduction of which of the following?
(A) inventory
(B) lead times
(C) customer service
(D) queue
3. Determining labor productivity requires information about all of the following EXCEPT
(A) pieces input
(B) pieces output
(C) total hours worked
(D) standard hours per piece
4. Which of the following capacity planning functions would most likely be eliminated when a manufacturer implements JIT techniques?
(A) rough-cut capacity planning
(B) resource requirements planning
(C) capacity requirements planning
(D) supplier capacity planning
5. Which of the following capacity management techniques would be most effective for reducing delivery lead time in a make-to-order production operation using Just-in-Time (JIT) methods?
(A) measuring and controlling work cell utilization
(B) releasing and controlling orders using kanban
(C) providing detailed schedules of shop floor operations
(D) on-line tracking of work-in-process inventories
