RESEARCH PAPER – Fall 2015

DUE DATE: Friday December 11th

ABSTRACT

Sustainable design is the art of designing physical objects to comply with the principles of economic, social, and ecological sustainability. It ranges from the microcosm of designing small objects for everyday use, through to the macrocosm of designing buildings. The essential aim of sustainable design is to produce places, products and services in a way that reduces use of non-renewable resources, minimizes environmental impact, and relates people with the natural environment. Sustainable design is often viewed as a necessary tool for achieving sustainability. It is related to the more heavy-industry-focused fields of industrial ecology and green chemistry, sharing tools such as life cycle assessment and life cycle energy analysis to judge the environmental impact or "greenness" of various design choices. Sustainable architecture applies techniques of sustainable design to architecture. In the broad context, sustainable architecture, seeks to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by enhancing efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, and development space.

ASSIGNMENT

Prepare a research paper over an aspect of sustainability or sustainable design as it relates specifically to a facility’s operation, design or management.

Note while sustainability encompasses many areas, direct your paper to sustainability as it relates directly to facilities and facilities management. For instance, power generation using wind is a current and important sustainability topic; however, it does not related directly to a facility unless the turbine is placed on the roof.

FORMAT

The paper is to be 10-15 pages in length including an abstract of no more than one paragraph. The paper should use 12-point type, double-spaced and 1” margins and include a bibliography of all references used in proper APA format.

PRESENTATION

Prepare a 5-6 slide PowerPoint presentation over you paper and findings and submit with your research paper. Include audio using the recording option available in PowerPoint. The PowerPoint presentation will be posted on the Canvas site for your classmates to review and evaluate.
