Biology Cell Test Review sheet

The Cell

1. Understand the names and functions of all cell organelles that were mentioned in class.

2. What is the study of cells called?

3. Who first observed cells through a microscope (cork)? Who observed many living cells and described them with great detail?

4. Be able to label a diagram of a cell.

5. What are 3 differences between plant cells and animal cells?

6. What is the main difference between prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells? What collections of organelles are found in each?

7. Give several examples of how the structure of a cell helps it in its function.

8. What does cell theory state?

9. What are the parts of the nucleus? Why is it considered the “control center” of the cell?

Membrane Transport

1. What is diffusion?

2. What is osmosis?

3. Is cellular energy used to run diffusion? Why or why not?

4. What is selective permeability? Give an example of something that is selectively permeable.

5. If a membrane allows water to pass, but not starch, what will happen to a sack of starch placed in a beaker of water? If iodine was added to the water, what would it indicate?

6. What is osmotic pressure? Give an example.

7. What is equilibrium? When does it occur?

8. If a plant cell with a NaCl concentration of 1% were placed in a solution of 10% NaCl, what would happen to the cell? Is the water solution hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic to the cell contents?

9. If an animal cell were placed in a hypotonic solution, what would happen to it? What would happen to a plant cell in the same solution? Why is there a difference?

10. What molecules compose the plasma membrane? What are their functions? Be able to label a diagram.

11. What region of the membrane is hydrophobic? Understand the parts of a phospholipid and their chemical nature relating to water.

11. What is the difference between passive and active transport? What are examples of each type?

12. What are endocytosis and exocytosis? When are they used?
