Biology 100 – Concepts of Biology 2011

Digestion Bonus Assignment Wong

Due date: Monday, March 7, 2011

Nutrition experts are constantly urging us to be careful what we consume. A multitude of scientific studies support the idea that certain substances are linked with good health and protection from a variety of diseases — including cancer, heart disease, and aging — while other substances may promote such diseases. What are some of these beneficial or dangerous substances, and what does research tell us about them?

Bonus assignment is worth a maximum of 10 points.

1. Read the Biology Matters article in Chapter F of your textbook, "The Importance of Vitamin E".

2. IN YOUR OWN WORDS, write a brief statement describing the most interesting thing you learned from this article about Vitamin E, and WHY you thought it was interesting and significant. You may need to define major new terms or words by Googling them.

3. Find TWO (2) Science Daily news articles that highlight research on different compounds in foods that show either benefit or danger to human health (www.sciencedaily.com). These can be either natural or synthetic compounds.

4. IN YOUR OWN WORDS, write a brief summary of what you learned from EACH news article. The following questions should be answered in your summary:

a) name the compound

b) in which food sources can this compound be found?

c) how is the specific compound shown to be a benefit or danger to humans?

d) are the conclusions based on actual human studies, or on animal or cell experiments?

e) how convincing are the research results to you?

5. Articles must NOT be older than 2008.

6. Cite both Science Daily articles using the formal citations shown at the bottom of each article.

FINAL WARNING: Any hint of plagiarism will result in penalties!

Reports will BE REJECTED if not submitted on REQUIRED REPORT TEMPLATE.
