ROTARY CLUB OF LANTZVILLE
MISSION STATEMENT
Joining in fellowship to support growth and development in education and health for those less fortunate in our local and international communities.

Presidential Observations

●  President Len – worried that “his” table was moving further away from the podium, but pleased that turnout this morning was an improvement over last week…

FOUNDATION

$100 donated to The Rotary Foundation this morning. THANK-YOU for your support.

Future donations, for this Rotary Year, will be directed to the PolioPlus Fund.

Sergeant-at-Arms

The Sgt-at-Arms was Doug S…who fined Robert G for bragging. Robert thanked Randy for stepping up. Don W looking forward to next year. Saeko admitted that it was her birthday on Tuesday. Barry was scraping snow in Beaverlodge last Thursday. Don C agreed that it was chilly (non-short weather) in Alberta. Harry working on our liquor license for the 11th. Bob M started O Canada a little high…but we came through in fine style. Dave E is biking (on a pedal bike) home from Whitehorse. Randy was the winner of this AM’s draw!

Breakfast at the 7-10 Club

Thank-you for your support.

It takes team work … and we’re pretty good now.

Next Breakfast – Saturday, June 25th.

Our 19th Annual Golf Tournament, our major fund raiser, is coming up on Friday, June 3rd. Robert G brought us up to date. It’s coming together with just 1 week to go.

¨ We make money from our sponsors – and there is room for more. Pass your contacts to Robert. It is our major fundraiser for the year.

¨ 96 golfers, so far, have registered or promised to sign up. Room for lots more – so, don’t say “No”!

¨ Prizes – Lorie says they’re trickling in, but, again, room for lots more – please – for the silent auction – a useful fundraiser in itself.

¨ And, we’ll be needing volunteers – for set-up in the AM, for registration from 11AM and on the course from 1PM. Can you (and your spouse, neighbour, friend, colleagues) spare a few hours? Talk to Lorie...

Next committee meeting – May 30th.

The Installation of incoming President Don White and his 2016-2017 Board of Directors will be held at Fairwinds on Wednesday, June 29th at 6PM. Only $30/person. More details coming from Randy i.d.c.
No morning meeting on Thursday, June 30th.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

¨ 6PM, Wed, Jun 1st - Wellington Senior Secondary has asked us to help with their “Exit Interviews” for graduating students. If you’re interested, talk to Joy. It is an easy and very interesting evening... J

¨ Sat, Jun 11th - We will be operating a beer kiosk (potentially a great fund raiser) at the 5K Foam Fest at Arbutus Meadows from 9 to 5. Thanks to Harry for stepping up for this. http://www.5kfoamfest.ca/ We will need a few Rotarians to help out for a few hours. More details, soon.

¨ Sun Jul 3rd – we will be helping with the parking at the Annual Show & Shine at Arbutus Meadows. More details from Don W, soon.

VOCATIONAL MINUTE

Randy M, filling in for William L, talked about the best PR vehicle for Rotary and our Club. US!

We tend to be number and quiet … so, we should do a better job about telling people about Rotary, our Club and our projects … what we have achieved … the good things we do and support in Nanaimo and around the world.

SOCIAL CONCERNS IN NANAIMO

John Horn, Social Planner for the city of Nanaimo, talked about some of the social issues that the city is facing. He has been in “the business” for 11 years and knows our city and some of the challenges it faces:

¨  Housing and homelessness

¨  Discarded syringes

¨  Sex trade task force

¨  Child poverty (a relativity concept)

¨  Integration of newcomers

¨  Social cohesion at the neighbourhood level

¨  Access to recreation and leisure.

¨  Social connectedness of isolated seniors

¨  Mental health and addictions.

During John’s talk, several small projects within these various areas were identified where we could help with funds and/or sweat equity. Something to think about for our coming year.
