Hi,

I am putting together this list of advice for you to assist with your job search. Some of this is relevant to an Intern position and some of it is more appropriate for your first job as well as the many other jobs you will change to over the course of your career. My advice is to save the materials because you will need them again.

The first and most important thing you can learn about this process is the value of networking. Whoever said “it is not what you know but who you know” was very much on target. Figuring out how to get your name in front of the key people making the hiring decision is tricky and the path if full of roadblocks. Learn the tricks and you can use them all your life.

You also need to have a plan – at least a loose one. Another old saying “if you don’t have a destination in mind then any road will take you there” is true about most things and certainly can be applied to your career. Figure out what you want to be doing in 1, 5, 10, 20 years and start doing the things that will help you to get there now. The world will change and you will adjust your course along the way but at least you are heading in a good direction.

Change the format of your resume file to lastname-firstname resume.doc – recruiters get hundreds of new resumes each week and they need to be able to find yours in the stack when the file gets saved. Make their job easier by helping them find you.

There are lists of recruiters that you can use that are available at your career planning offices. Send your resume to all of them - the more the better. Don't get discouraged when they don't call you back - I have been getting calls recently from recruiters who I have not heard from in 2-3 years so get yourself into their database and you will hear from them some day.

Cultivate relationships with recruiters and always take their calls even if you only tell them “thanks for the call but I am not interested”. Always offer to help them to network with others in your field - it will pay off in the long run.

Join the networking groups like www.linkedin.com (think Facebook for business) - it is a great way to stay connected in the business world. Your 6-degrees of separation link to virtually anyone on the planet comes into play here so use your parents, aunts, uncles and friends too.

Speaking of friends and family, make sure that you use them for the networking value. People all work somewhere and you will be amazed at where the connections come from.

Go to the career planning office or the library and find the "Book of Lists" that is put out by the Philadelphia Businss Journal - it is worthy of your getting a subscription to this so that you get yourself a copy of this book every year. It is one of the most valuable targeting tools you can find for helping you to figure out where to send your resume (they publish each week in the paper a list of the top 50 this or that and then once a year bind it into the "book of lists").

Consider joining professional organizations in your field - they are a great way to network. The Student Professional Organizations at your school have chapters of AITP (technology), SHRM (Human Resources) and many other societies that can help you now and more so down the line including the Alumni Association at your school. Find them and spend the time to get engaged and it will pay off in the long run.

Speaking of the Alumni Association make sure that you join and stay involved. Networking is a key part of your career management and you need to be active.

I have attached a stack of materials for you to use that was originally intended for more senior folks but the advice is sound. Read it and save it for some day when you will need it again.

Check out all of these sources like www.dice.com and www.jobcircle.com and the others - they all have jobs on them but the success rate will be low. Networking is the key (if I have not said that enough times).

This site is all about Internships – use the tools that are there for free. Lots of companies hire interns you just have to search them out. http://www.internshipinstitute.org/students.asp

Lastly I have attached a summary of the handful of internship opportunities that I have gotten so far and will continue to share them as they come in. Some of them will be paid and others will not be (and some did not say) but the experience and entry on your resume is still valuable either way.

Internship Opportunities:

I need individuals to take financial related calls from consumers who are in need of a refinance but yet can not actually do it, because they are late on the mortgage. We have a Loan Modification program in place that allows consumers to help save their lives. This is directly related to the Stimulus package Obama put out. Could be a very interesting and extremely valuable experience since these candidates will have direct contact with consumers all over the country in distress. We already have 300 paid people and can get as many as we want, which means they come with experience. Your students would be on a specific project that would expose them to the sub-prime financial crisis first hand. Not a paid internship

My company has had interns focused on Marketing, sales, public relations, communications, event planning, HR and training.

Our internships are typically unpaid; however the intern gets real work experience and a strong reference. We have an opening for an intern this summer.

Also, I serve on an advisory board at The University of Penn, my alma mater.

All the best,

Shawn
