Assignment 1— Immunisation project

Students working in groups of 5 will immunise a rabbit and evaluate the response over a period of 2 months. This assignment is worth 60% and will be presented in a public wiki.

The wiki will be the representation of the group’s

·  understanding and application of the body of knowledge related to immunisation,

·  working knowledge of animal ethics,

·  skills in collaborative problem solving in a research context in particular it’s ability to communicate effectively, and

·  ability to respond appropriately to feedback

You will be allocated to a group (week 1) and you will find details of your group allocation in the Assignment 1 folder located in the left-hand menu of the online learning resources for this course. Each group has at least 5 students. Your group will need to organise your public wiki (try wikispaces or pb wiki) and post the url to the course discussion group (week 3).

Your group’s wiki needs to contain:

·  Group name and members

·  Project plan – including task allocation (who is doing what when)(week 4)

·  Animal ethics considerations (week 4)

·  Principle of raising antibodies through animal immunisation (week 4)

·  Immunisation regime used and why (week 4)

·  Rationale, process (week 4), results (week 8 ) and analysis (week 12) of antibody titration, antibody class and reactivity using immunoblotting

·  Evidence of collaborative problem solving (week 4, 8, 12)

·  Evidence of consideration and response to feedback received and given to others (group and individual) (week 4, 8, 12). Individual group members may wish to profile their individual development using a linked blog rather than as part of the group wiki.

Feedback on your group’s wiki will be provided by your group members (10%), peers (10%), teachers (70%) and representatives from the profession (10%), through the embedded wiki, discussion groups and through feedback sheets in weeks 4, 8 and 12.

Special requirements – professional behaviour within the learning environment

All students must demonstrate appropriate professional behaviour within the learning environments (online and physical). Remember these wikis are public and representatives from the Profession will be reviewing the wikis. All revisions of the wiki are accessible. Unprofessional behaviours are those that breach privacy, harassment or legal policies of the University of South Australia. A student demonstrating unprofessional behaviour will be formally cautioned of the nature of the unprofessional behaviour, counselled about the exact nature of the behaviour and provided with alternative practice or strategies to avoid the unprofessional behaviour in the future. The course coordinator will keep a written record of the unprofessional behaviour and the counselling session. Only one episode of unprofessional behaviour with a formal caution will be tolerated, that is, students who have demonstrated unprofessional behaviour and have then been formally cautioned and counselled, will be recorded as demonstrating unprofessional behaviour if a second incident relating to unprofessional behaviour occurs even if the second incident involves a different unprofessional behaviour. Students deemed to have unprofessional behaviour will be recorded as a fail.

Examples of unprofessional behaviour in include (but are not limited to):

·  Abusive, dismissive, derogatory, threatening or sexually suggestive language within the online discussion environment

·  Misuse of personal contact details of other students within the course. This includes the provision of personal information to people outside the course, the sending of unsolicited information or breaches of privacy or confidentiality.

·  Plagiarism of published / referenced or peer’s written work – see Policy by going now to: http://www.unisa.edu.au/policies/manual/default.asp#10 for details of behaviours / actions included as plagiarism, which will be dealt with under the provisions of the policy for Academic Misconduct.

·  Inclusion of material in individual work that includes significant assistance from another person, in a manner unacceptable according to the assessment guidelines for the course.
