Assignment 1: Grad Seminars

Due: May

All grads must attend seven seminars over the course of the school year.

You must chose at least one seminar from each group. You are welcome to attend more than the minimum number.

Healthy Lifestyles

· DeStress for success (requires participant in all 5 workshops)

Work Preparation

· Resume & Cover Letter workshop (complete assignment 4 & 5)

· Career planning workshop (complete assignment 1)

· Presentation from community members of various professions (will be several seminars in this group)

University, College, Trades preparation

· Navigating university websites (complete Assignment 3)

· Career and University Fair

· Evening Post Secondary Information

· University representative visits

· Skills Yukon presentation

· Evening Yukon grant & scholarship presentation

· Yukon College tour

Most seminars will take place over the lunch period.

To receive credit for this assignment you must sign in at the seminars of your choice.

Assignment 2: Career Research

Due: October 15th

Your goal is to prepare a report for a career of your choice.

Make sure that you answer the following questions:

-Title of Career: __________________________

-Salary expectations: _______________________

-Lifestyle (time off, travel etc.)

Career potential (Is it a growing career? What will be happening

in the next few years?)

-Education requirements both for high school and post-secondary.

-Schools that offer training for your career

You must get feedback from one other adult on this. Please attach a written comment from that person – their name, address, telephone number. The comments must be signed by the person you gave it to be evaluated.

Assignment 3: Post-Secondary Research

Due: November 15th

Based on your previous exploration of personal interests, skills, and strengths, and the career or career cluster that interests you research two or three post-secondary education or training programs that relate to your identified career.

The chart can be downloaded from Ms. Main’s Homework Page.

Create a chart (electronic) which represent the following:

- prerequisites

- type of program and specific content covered

- length of program

- cost of program per year attended

- location of institution

- exit qualifications/credentials and the transferability of those qualifications. (Chart is available online for download)

Once all variables have been considered, compare and “rate” the institutions based on what might seem most appropriate for you.

Assessment: You will be graded on the charts representing your research conducted on the variables for each post secondary education and training program and your rating of the information.

Assignment 4: Resume

Due: October 15th

You are to prepare an error-free resume that you could use when applying for a job.

Resume Format:

Header: Your name, address, phone number, and contact.

Career Objective: Tell the potential employer why you would like to apply for the stated position.

Education: List educational facilities attended in the last 3-10 years. (Do not go below grade 8.)

Work Experience: List jobs in reverse chronological order (begin with most recent job). Give contact name and number and a brief description of what you do/did at the jobs.

Skills and Awards: List all important skills and Awards you have received.

References: Give at least two references, names, what they do, and phone numbers.

Assignment 5: Cover Letter

Due: October 15th

You are to prepare an error-free cover letter applying for a job from one of the following sources: -the classifieds -the job posting

-a classified ad you have found yourself

Format: Using a block style business letter with your name, address, phone number, and contact in the header, tell the potential employer why you would like to apply for the stated position. This is your chance to tell the employer the positive attributes that you bring to the job including personality, work ethic, and interest in the position.

Assignment 6: PSI selection

Due: March 1st

1. Get your BC Pen #

2. Go to the Grad Transitions Webpage

3. Click on Post Secondary Institutions Selection Student login

4. Follow the steps on the website to select the Universities/Colleges where your transcripts will be sent.
