·  The unit of study commenced with discussion of ‘visual art’. The students brought samples of art from their cultures to present. The teacher brought selected texts which illustrated the periods of Australian Art. The class used the internet to search art and artists. We visited the National Gallery of Victoria website. Students who were practising artists brought samples of their work and discussed the material and methods used to create the pieces. We built up a vocabulary together of words and terms used to describe visual art – painting. We looked at the structure of language for Describing the artist’s techniques, style, influences, themes and subjects We covered the content words and structure of sentences for speaking and writing about technique, material, subject, and influences. We also discussed our subjective responses to visual works. The class read texts about Australian Artists written by the teacher as model texts. Then students selected sections on specific artists from a range of text books. This activity was supported by a visit to the NGV Ian Potter – Fed Square art gallery. Each student had two worksheets to complete at the gallery – one for a modern art work and one for a 19th century work. Finally the class spent some time on individual assignement work – to research an artist, then write a report and prepare a class talk. The teacher modelled both the report structure and then the structure of the talks. See worksheets. Assessment methods included:
§  Teacher observation – feedback – checklists
§  Student self assessment
§  Peer Assessment
§  Written feedback for oral and written task
§  Teacher observation of portfolio of reading & class discussion

Sidney Nolan

Insert picture of Nolan’s Wimmera (see http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/ngvaustralia/)

Sidney Nolan’s painting Wim

mera (from Mt Arapiles) is a landscape of the wheat growing area of northern Victoria. His style is quite different from traditional landscapes. His influences included Cezanne, Matisse and Picasso.

Nolan used Ripolin, a fast-drying and extremely fluid enamel house-paint on board to produce his work. His paintings were usually completed in one session. The painting shows quick brush strokes, without much mixing and blending of colour. The colours are bright and solid, almost like a child’s painting. The painting has two halves. The left hand side represents the red desert, natural bush and salt lakes of the area. The right hand side demonstrates the human influence on the landscape: settlement, wheat fields and a wheat silo. These are typical of the Wimmera country towns.

The painting is simplistic, but represents a new view of the Australian landscape developed in the 1940s and 1950s.

Nora Heysen

Insert picture of Heysen’s Flowers in a Delft Vase (see http://www.nla.gov.au/exhibitions/noraheysen/chalet/chalet.html)

Nora Heysen (1911-2003) began her painting learning traditional techniques which used dark, sombre colours. Later she was influenced by the Impressionists like Manet and Monet, and her colours became lighter, and brighter. She did not join the modern painters, and continued to paint in a fairly traditional way all her life.

This still life, Flowers in a Delft Vase, was painted in about 1946, when her work was very much influenced by the Impressionist style. It is an oil painting on board. She painted this when she lived in a house with a large garden. She grew her own flowers for painting, and the atmosphere was peaceful.

The painting reflects the artist’s peaceful environment, even though it was painted during the war.
