Asphalt Paver Start-Up and Shut-Down Procedures

Do not operate this equipment unless you are trained to do so and are familiar with the operating manual and the following job procedure. Company policy dictates that any or all equipment with deficient brakes must be immediately parked and tagged accordingly.

Start Up

1.  Walk around the machine; visually inspect the tires, burners and hopper.

2.  Unlock all control panels and fire extinguishers.

3.  Grease auger, flight chain and VB shaft bearings.

4.  Start the machine and warm up at a low idle.

5.  Cycle all hydraulic circuits.

6.  Start the burners with the vibrators on, then, check the augers and hopper.

Do not overheat the screed plate or leave unattended while heating.

7. Rev up the machine and move to the paving site, checking the steering and brakes on the way.

8. Run the paver at full RPM during asphalt paving operation.

Shutdown

1.  Idle the paver down.

2.  Diesel the hopper, augers, chains, and extensions, over gravel, to loosen any asphalt stuck on the machine. (See Dieseling Equipment in Safe Work Practices),

3.  Clean excess asphalt from the paver at the end of the shift OFF existing asphalt surfaces.

4.  Purge the augers and flight chain bearings, and grease all lube points at the end of the day (shift) while paver is hot

5.  Park the paver off the asphalt surface, on level ground, and with the brake on. Lock up the panels and fire extinguishers. Place barricades around the paver. (if applicable)

6.  Fill out an “equipment repair form” reporting any work that needs to be completed on the equipment and return to Foreman. (See Vehicle/Equipment Maintenance in Section 8 for further information)
