Description: Project Health Care is a program centered around the Department of Emergency. It exposes students to a variety of experiences and fosters knowledge about careers in health care. Participants are expected to participate in CPR, first aid and self-defense classes and perform certain tasks and assist the medical staff.
Eligibility: Annually, the program accepts up to 30 students from the Northeast who must work 22 hours per week. Applications from motivated college students with a strong interest in health care and a willingness to participate in all aspects of healthcare (medicine, physician assistants, clinical psychologist, and clinical social workers) are encouraged.

Barbara Jordan Congressional Scholars Program at Howard University

Description: A program to honor the legacy of former Kaiser Trustee and Congresswoman, Barbara Jordan, by creating new opportunities for minority students in health policy and eventually, increasing the numbers of minority health policy professionals. The program will annually provide 10 talented, economically disadvantaged college seniors or recent graduates with a 9-week summer college internship in a congressional office with major health policy responsibilities. The scholars will gain exposure to health policy issues and firsthand understanding of how the federal government works. Scholars will receive a stipend of $1500 upon completion of the program, an allowance for incidentals, travel expenses to DC and lodging at Howard University.
Eligibility: Candidates must be in their senior year of undergraduate study or have graduated within the last twelve months from an accredited US college or university.

Description: Health Careers Opportunity Program is designed to identify minority and disadvantaged college students with interest and aptitude for careers in medicine and allied health, to develop activities and implement enriching supplemental academic programs appropriate for the identified students; to train students to perform adequately on the MCAT; to train students to prepare applications and perform adequately in interview session. Eligible students will receive a stipend.
Eligibility: Undergraduate college students or rising freshmen eligible to apply. Applicants must be a members of an ethnic minority, low income and/or federally recognized disadvantaged group and have taken some science and mathematics courses. Students should also have a minimum of 2.5 GPA.

Description: Research Internship in Clinical Psychology This course is a full-time intensive, six-week internship involving both didactic seminars and “hands-on” experience for students who are considering careers in the health professions. Eligibility: Designed for 2 levels of college students who are interested in the health professions. Students in the intermediate group should have finished their freshman or sophomore year. Those in the advanced group should have finished their junior or senior year and be planning to apply to medical, dental, or graduate school or an allied health program.

St. Luke’s – Roosevelt Hospital

Description: The Academic Associate Program is a clinical research assistant program in the Emergency Department of the St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center. Duties include an active role in 7 current ongoing clinical research projects ranging from controlled trials of medication to observational cohort studies to various others. Opportunities for high-level involvement in specific research projects are available to motivated, reliable, interested individuals in addition to baseline commitment. Observation of emergency department procedures, resuscitations, and general care is an integrated part of the experience. Introduces students to the foundations, goals, and basic interpretation of clinical research, particularly in the emergency setting, and should dovetail with the knowledge acquired working as an Academic Associate. At the conclusion of one semester of service, the program director will write a letter of support for a health professional school.
Duration: 8-hour a week commitment – two 4-hour shifts
