AREA FFA OFFICER JOB DESCRIPTION:

Area FFA Officers in the Louisiana FFA Association will be elected at the Area FFA Leadership Camp.

There will be eight officers elected by the voting delegation (two FFA members per chapter) at the respective FFA Leadership Camp and these officers shall serve one year from that date. The offices elected will include the following:

1) / Area President
2) / Area Secretary
3) / 2 Area Vice-Presidents- Vice president and Junior Vice President
4) / Treasurer
5) / Reporter
6) / Sentinel
7) / Parliamentarian

All officer candidates must be interviewed by the Area FFA Nominating Committee during the Area FFA Leadership Camp in order to qualify as an official Area Officer Candidate. A Nominating Committee, consisting of members from their respective area. This committee shall report during the Area Leadership Camp. Election of officers, which shall be by ballot, shall require a majority vote of all the delegates present.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary mission of the officer team shall be to provide leadership to the more than 10,000 members of the Louisiana FFA Association and to aid in conducting the various contest and awards programs.

The Officers must also provide the leadership necessary to promote agricultural education and the FFA to students. This leadership is evidenced by on site seminars in leadership development through and for the local membership and by representation of this membership at State and Area levels in decision/policy making and informational/motivational gatherings, meetings, and chapter visits.

These officers communicate with all agricultural students concerning extensive fields of agriculture. They must have reasonable knowledge of the agriculture industry in the Area. They must also be able to answer questions pertaining to the various collegiate agriculture programs in the Area.

Further, the Area Officers are to serve as representatives of the organization to business and industry leaders. They are to work as spokespersons for not only the FFA and Agricultural Education, but the agricultural industry as a whole.

THE SUMMER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR AREA OFFICERS:

Upon election in July, the officers have a meeting at the Leadership Camp site immediately following adjournment concerning their duties and responsibilities. They will be required to attend the Area Officer training program which will be held after the conclusion of all Area Leadership Camps.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE AREA FFA OFFICER:

During the school year, the Area FFA Officers will have a wide range of duties to fulfill. These duties include but are not limited to the following:

1) / Chapter Visits - To deliver remarks to members in local FFA Chapters concerning the FFA and Agricultural Education, inspiring FFA members to set and attain higher goals in the FFA, and open the FFA door to those students who are not FFA members. All visits must have the written prior approval from the State Executive Secretary.
2) / Banquets – deliver speeches depending upon the officer’s special circumstances.
3) / CDE Programs (Contest): The Louisiana FFA Association conducts various CDE Activities. The Area Officers are an integral part of the efficient process of conducting events. Each Area Officer is required to attend the Area CDE’s
4) / Area Officers are also asked to appear on TV and radio spots as the occasion arises.
5) / Technical Updates and Conferences.
6) / Understand concepts, precepts, and constitutional content.
7) / Understand the concepts and promote the activities of the Louisiana FFA Association, Louisiana FFA Alumni, and the Louisiana FFA Foundation.

DUTIES AND CREATIVE EFFORTS OF THE AREA OFFICER TEAM

1) / Develop a series of banquet speeches
2) / Develop a series of speeches to address various agricultural groups
3) / Communicate in writing and via phone with FFA Advisors and FFA Members pertaining to various local FFA activities

AREA FFA OFFICER COMMITMENT FORM

6. / Regularly, and on time, write all letters, thank-you notes and other correspondence which are necessary and desirable.
7. / Strive to improve my ability to carry on meaningful and enjoyable conversations with individuals of all ages and walks of life.
8. / Accept and search out constructive criticism and evaluation of my total performance.
9. / Keep myself up to date on current events.
10. / Evaluate, periodically, my personality and attitudes making every effort to improve myself.
11. / Maintain and protect my health.
12. / Forego all alcohol, tobacco and illegal substances while serving as an area officer.
13. / Treat all FFA members equally by not favoring one over another.
14. / Conduct myself in a manner which commands respect without any display of superiority.
15. / Maintain my dignity while being personable, concerned and interested in contacts with others.
16. / Avoid places or activities that in any way would raise questions as to one's moral character or conduct.
17. / Consider FFA officer activities to be my primary responsibility.
18. / Use wholesome and appropriate language in all speeches and informal conversations.
19. / Maintain proper dress and good grooming for all occasions so as to project a desirable image of the FFA. Hair styles shall be professional in appearance. Males are prohibited from having beards, mustaches, and piercings while representing the organization.
20. / Work in harmony with fellow FFA officers, and not knowingly engage in conversations detrimental to other FFA members, officers and adults.
21. / Serve as a member of the team, always maintaining a cooperative attitude.
22. / Be willing to take and follow instructions as directed by those responsible for area FFA officers and state and national programs.
23. / Must submit monthly status reports to the State FFA Office.
24. / Be available to attend and participate in the following activities during the year:
-Area Officer Training / -All Area Career Development Events
-Recommended chapter visits and banquets with State FFA Officers / -Louisiana FFA’s Annual Capitol Day in
Baton Rouge
-Attend the State Leadership Delegates’ Conference (SLDC) / -Regular Email Correspondence with Louisiana FFA Staff
-Area Officers must attend SLDC and will serve as a leadership delegate at the annual Louisiana FFA Convention
-Hold and attend a minimum of two officer meetings which will be enforced by the Area Advisor.
Absences must have a written excuse submitted by the officer’s local advisor.

If elected to Area office, I will carry out my responsibilities in accordance with these requirements and understand that I can be removed from office by the State Executive Committee if I do not satisfactorily follow these established standards. I also understand that if I am ever removed from office because of a violation of these standards, I will be prohibited from seeking area or State office in the future.

Responsibilities and Conduct of FFA Members

Attending FFA Events

FFA Members are under the supervision of agriscience teachers, Area staff, and other adults helping with the events. Each FFA member will be expected to participate fully in all programs and uphold exemplary standards of behavior.

The following are grounds for sending FFA members home at their parents’ expense and will be grounds for suspension in area and Area events for up to 12 months:

l Possession or use of illegal drugs or alcoholic beverages.

l Misuse or abuse of public or personal property. (Individuals responsible will also be required to pay for damages)

l Disrespect for the authority of teachers, Statestaff, other adults and Area officers (such as failing to follow specific rules or instructions for the event or using abusive language).

l Unauthorized absence from the premises of the event.

l Unauthorized use of vehicles during the event.

l Unauthorized possession of firearms.

l Breaking curfew or disturbing the peace after curfew or room check.

Anyone sent home will lose placings, points and awards won at the event.

Realizing these guidelines are not all inclusive, the Louisiana FFA Association reserves the right to adjust these policies.

Decisions on discipline will be the responsibility of the teacher supervising the event in consultation with others designated as supervisors such as the FFA Executive Committee.
