Untalan Middle School colors are gold and black. Our mascot is the WILDCAT, and we incorporate this into the Teaming concept with each team being identified by a type of wildcat. Be proud of your school and take good care of it. We encourage you to ask questions and make suggestions for improvement.

The driving mission of the faculty, staff, and support personnel of Luis P. Untalan Middle School is to develop in each student a vision of success and to provide the means of achieving it. Creating an environment in which successes are celebrated and failures are viewed as opportunities is essential to our mission. The uniqueness of each student requires all personnel at Luis P. Untalan Middle School to strive to provide diverse programs, to understand student needs, to be sensitive to cognitive social and emotional stages of development, and to respect the individuality of each student. Our mission is grounded in our core belief that effective educational practices and the process of educating young people are essential to providing you with the best education possible.

êA successful education is viewed as a journey not a destination. The process of learning should be viewed as enjoyable, challenging, and fulfilling.

êSuccess involves a risk of failure; failing creates opportunities for growth. Each of us has the responsibility to provide support and encouragement to risk takers and to recognize that failing does not make one a failure.

êThe students, faculty, staff, parents and volunteers form a community of learners with individual needs and individual differences. All of us can learn from each other. We are our own best resource.

êProviding an atmosphere that is safe and nurturing is a key element to a successful school. Students need to display appropriate behavior that helps them to be successful in all areas of positive school life. All faculty and staff of Untalan Middle School need to serve as role models for students.

êTeaching should be directed to the higher levels of thinking that require students to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information. Teaching how to manipulate information is more important than teaching how to memorize.

êA divergent curriculum ensures that students are assisted and not sorted. Providing opportunities and removing obstacles are essential because we cannot afford to lose students.

êThe curriculum is shaped by student needs. Students are not shaped to fit the curriculum.

êThe curriculum is a means to an end-not an end unto itself.

êThe curriculum must be planned over time, and must be changed when there is a need to change. The old way may not be the best way.

êThe “True Middle School Concept” is a program that meets the needs of its pre-adolescent learners. Its components are Advisory, Interdisciplinary, and Exploratory Programs. A certain group of students is assigned to a team of teachers who can work effectively in an interactive and integrated manner.

êEvaluation is an on-going process that indicates where students need to improve. We help students meet the curricular standards-not verify that they haven’t.

êAll students must be prepared to live in a world in which the ideals of democracy, tolerance for difference, multi-cultural awareness, and the need for global interdependence are essential.

êFeeling a sense of pride is important to us all. We must strive to obtain it and nurture it, in every Untalan Middle School Student.

êThe Luis P. Untalan Middle facility belongs to all of us, and so does the responsibility of keeping it clean, safe, and inviting.

êEveryone who contributes to the success of Untalan Middle School (custodians, cafeteria staff, school aides, clerical personnel, teachers, and administrators) working together towards a common goal brings a healthy environment.

êDecisions that concern Untalan Middle are made through a collaborative process that involves students, teachers, parents, administrators, support staff, and others.

êAthletics, clubs, and organizations are viewed as intra curricular. Each program plays an important role in the overall education of our students. At times, the needs of one program may temporarily overshadow the needs of another in order to best meet the needs of our students.

êUntalan Middle School is part of the community. We have a responsibility to respect the community. We are a resource to the community and the community is a resource to us.

êThe success of Untalan Middle School in accomplishing the primary task of educating young people is measured by the collective successes of each student. When our students are unsuccessful, we have been unsuccessful. Learning and teaching are not separate entities. The assessment of one is an assessment of the other. .

These are our core beliefs. Our policies, procedures, actions and decisions will be judged against our missions and these beliefs. Doing what is right for students is our primary goal. Each of us has a purpose and responsibility in achieving this goal.

WHO OWNS THE SCHOOL?

We all do! A portion of the taxes (your parents included) we pay are used to build and maintain the public school system. Everyone pays taxes in one form or another. Therefore, any damage done to this building, equipment, buses or books must be paid for with your family’s money.

It is not enough that you should refrain from doing anything to increase this cost to your parents, neighbors and yourself, but you must also help protect the school by discouraging or reporting such activity done by any other person.

The Guam Public Schools, reflecting the democratic way of life, seek to fulfill the student’s educational and occupational needs.

Guiding Principle I

Each student should develop a philosophy of life that includes dignity and direction, thereby enabling them to cope with technological and ideological changes. Therefore, the schools should employ every means available to help make each student more considerate of others and more capable of contributing to his fellow man.

Guiding Principle II

The schools should educate each student to develop human relationships that are relevant in the home, at school, on the job and in the community.

Guiding Principle III

The schools should seek to instill in each student a sense of civic responsibility to the local community, Island Government, Federal Government, and the world community.

Guiding Principle IV

The schools should assist each student to become a productive citizen, to develop economic independence and to become an efficient consumer.

Guiding Principle V

The schools should provide opportunities for exploring the world of work and for developing career-consciousness in terms of occupations and higher education. As preparation for life in which employment is a fundamental part, educational opportunities should be provided for students who wish to be trained in job-entry skills prior to entering the labor market.

Guiding Principle VI

The school should be cognizant of the increasing amount of leisure time and should encourage students, through school activities to use their time in ways that are constructive to themselves and to their society.

Guiding Principle VII

The educational system should encourage and maintain the highest degree of professionalism. This should be reflected by the actions and attitudes of the Guam Territorial Board of Education, the district administrator, school administrators, classroom teaches, classified staff, and parents.

Guiding Principle VIII

The Government of Guam should provide plants and sites that provide the best possible instructional environment and should direct itself toward increasing the quality of education facilities. A construction program should be maintained that recognizes increased enrollment, technological change, safety and recreational facilities.

It is impossible to list all student responsibilities, but it must be emphasized that lack of responsibility means a weakening of rights.
