STACKS MAINTENANCE

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB SUMMARY:

Maintaining the book stacks so that patrons can easily find materials on the shelves is one of the most important functions performed by the AFA Library Staff. Shelving books and maintaining the stacks areas are the main responsibilities of the stacks maintenance unit.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Shelves library materials.

· Employee will be assigned a specific section to maintain.

· All publications are to be shelved in proper call number order.

· Items should be placed upright on the shelves to avoid damage to the spine and pulled out to the edges of the shelves to make even, neat rows. Books should not be forced into place on a shelf. If there is room on adjacent shelves, shift books to accommodate the item. If not, report spacing issues to the circulation supervisor.

· Items that have been damaged (mold, mildew, insect, tears on covers, binding coming apart, pages falling out,) should be processed for rebinding or preservation review. Items that do not have a call number on the publication need to be processed for relabeling

· Check book trucks near the photocopiers and elsewhere, and sort books on them by call number in the to-be-shelved areas.

Shelf-reading

· Sign in on the shelf-reading log.

· Begin at the last call number read.

· Read the call number of each book on a shelf to ensure materials are in the proper order.

· Correct local shelving arrangement and/or places grossly misplaced books in the reshelving area.

· Make sure that books on a particular shelf are upright, tidy, and that a large bookend holds the books in place.

· Sign out on the shelf-reading log, noting the last call number read.
