Application for Minor in Music Education

APPLICATION FOR MINOR IN MUSIC EDUCATION

This Music Education Area Minor offers students the ability to gain training in music pedagogy, whether for a studio, classroom, or rehearsal setting. The three possible streams also provide an excellent foundation for students wishing to pursue a second degree (B.Ed. or M. Ed.) for the purposes of Teacher Certification. (Note: By itself the minor provides no official certification.)

Minor in Music Education

The Minor in Music Education is available to all students (with the exception of students in the concurrent B.Mus/B.Ed program) subject to the approval of the Schulich School of Music. This option will take the place of electives. The minor has limited enrolment.

Course requirements (18 total credits):

REQUIRED COURSES (3 CREDITS)

COMPLEMENTARY COURSES (15 CREDITS):

Students will select courses from one of the following three streams.

Stream I: Studio Teaching

Six credits selected from:

·  MUGT 205 Psychology of Music (3)

·  MUGT 355 Music in Early Childhood (3)

·  MUGT 358 General Music for Adults and Teenagers (3)

·  MUGT 403 Selected Topics in Music Education (3)

Nine credits selected from courses with a prefix of MUCT, MUGT, MUIT.

Stream II: Elementary Music

Six credits selected from:

·  MUCT 235 Vocal Techniques (3)

·  MUCT 315 Choral Conducting (3)

·  MUGT 205 Psychology of Music (3)

·  MUGT 354 Music for Children (3)

·  MUGT 355 Music in Early Childhood (3)

·  MUIT 250 Guitar Techniques

Nine credits selected from courses with a prefix of MUCT, MUGT, MUIT.

Stream III: Secondary Music:

Six credits selected from:

·  MUCT 235 Vocal Techniques (3)

·  MUCT 315 Choral Conducting (3)
