Thank you for your interest in applying for a GPSF External Appointment position. These pages outline the brief application (page 2) and the description of duties for each position.

You may apply for and hold more than one external appointment. If you are a GPSF Senator, you may have an external appointment(s) and retain your seat. You may also apply concurrently to the GPSF Cabinet and, if selected, serve in both capacities. While appointments are unpaid, they offer the opportunity to make direct contributions to University policy, increase the visibility and voice of Graduate and Professional Students and gain relevant experience in academia. Most external appointments require a time commitment of 1-2 hours per month (on average), including brief summaries to the Vice President of External Affairs.

Administrative Board of the Library

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Monthly

Description: Advises the University librarian on the administration of the University library system; formulates, together with the University librarian, the basic policies governing the acquisition of library materials and the use of such materials; allocates, with the advice of the University librarian, the book funds which are not specifically designated; submits to the chancellor, through the University librarian, its advice on the establishment or discontinuance of library service units outside of the general library building; reviews the University librarians budget request; and makes an annual report to the Faculty Council.

Association of Student Governments

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Monthly

Description: Delegates represent students of UNC system to the Board of Governors. UNC-CH delegates represent our university’s specific needs and hopes to the larger association. Broken up into committees, this group tackles academic affairs, legislative issues, as well as many other problems for students across the state. Delegates are full members of ASG, but vote only as alternates and still must attend meetings (see additional information). Delegates must have prior experience and membership in any branch of Student Government.

Campus Recreation Board of Directors

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Generally, CRB meets once/semester or as often as needed
Description: To help develop and review long range strategic plans in the areas of Campus Recreation budget, fees, facility development, policies, and staffing; To review and provide input regarding operational decisions, policies and procedures, eligibility and facility utilization; To assist in the development of program goals and vision statements; To serve as the sounding board for recommendations from the campus community, more specifically the various Campus Recreation councils; and to annually review the goals and objectives of Campus Recreation.

Building and Grounds Committee

Approximately Meeting Frequency: Monthly

The committee advises the chancellor on plans for the long-range physical development of the campus, the siting and exterior design of new and renovated buildings, major landscaping changes, the selection of architects, the location of monuments and memorials, and such other matters as the chancellor may refer to it.

Carolina Dining Services Board of Directors

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Monthly

Description: Responsibilities include: Formulate and implement policies that will achieve the university's food service goals; Review the Annual Plan, which includes budgets, operating hours, menus and staffing needs. Make appropriate and reasonable recommendations; Assist in the design and development of new or renovated dining service facilities; Assess and advocate student dining service needs; Educate the student population regarding on-campus dining services; Assist in the evaluation and selection of dining service contractors.

Carolina Union Board of Directors

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Monthly

The Carolina Union is an organization of students, professional staff, and part-time student staff who provide programs, services, and facilities that all members of the campus community need in their daily lives. The Union contributes to the educational mission of the institution through the provision of cultural, social, educational, and entertaining programs that create opportunities for members of the campus community to engage in debate, conversation, and interaction around the issues of the time. The Union is a unifying force on campus where diverse opinions and people are evident – where individuals learn to respect others and learn how to work together. The Union creates a sense of belonging and an environment of caring for all students and student groups.

Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on Transportation

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Monthly

Description: Committee advises the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration on issues of transportation access and development. Responsibilities include: Gain an understanding of the goals of the campus master plan approved by the Board of Trustees and the binding traffic and transit requirements of the companion development plan approved by the Town of Chapel Hill; Consider the University’s desire to become more environmentally responsible; With assistance from the Department of Public Safety (DPS), conduct periodic surveys of campus constituencies to identify access needs for a planning period of five years. Advise on priorities for addressing these needs.

Chancellor’s Awards Committee

Approximate Meeting Frequency: 1-2 times fall semester (after fall break). During the spring semester, the committee meets as needed approximately every 3 weeks starting at the end of January.

Description: The Chancellor’s Awards Committee is responsible for the fulfillment of the charge from the Chancellor’s Office, consideration of awards to be added, and the planning, execution, and evaluation of the awards ceremony, an annual ceremony recognizing outstanding achievements by Carolina students in both academics and co-curricular student activities. The committee is not responsible for the selection of the awards.

Graduate Student Professional Development Advisory Council

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Once/semester

The purpose of the committee is to brainstorm ideas for professionalization workshops for graduate and professional students with the goal to expand offerings and integrate graduate student suggestions for workshops.

Housing Advisory Board

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Monthly

The purpose of the board is to provide an opportunity for discussion and information sharing regarding housing initiatives, budgets, renovations/construction, programs, impacts of growth, and other related issues and challenges. Previously, the board initiated a graduate student housing survey to determine the needs of this population; assisted in the comprehensive campus-wide housing survey and focus groups with regard to redevelopment of Odum Village and Granville Towers; reviewed and discussed the DHRE budget and rates, including department actions to meet changing budget constraints.

Student Grievance Committee

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Training procedures, then as needed.

The Student Grievance Committee of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill hears student grievances and appeals in cases arising under the following laws and policies: the UNC-Chapel Hill Policy Statement on Non-Discrimination, the UNC Chapel Hill Policy on Prohibited Harassment and Discrimination, and FERPA.

Renewable Energy Special Projects Committee

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Full Committee Meetings: Monthly

Description: Oversees campus renewable energy projects and various field trips to oversee sustainable design features. Depending on the projects we have going, there are opportunities to participate in additional meetings of various lengths with architects, engineers, high-level administration, and facilities personnel. SARVTAE: Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Training and Education

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Monthly

Description: The purpose of SARVTAE is: 1) to educate, inform, and actively engage members of the UNC-Chapel Hill collectively preventing sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking, 2) to ensure safe, visible, and accessible services for all survivors of interpersonal violence, 3) to create a campus and community environment free of interpersonal violence

SHARE Women’s Health and Safety

Approximate meeting frequency: Three times per year

The committee works to advocate for survivors of sexual assault, including working to standardize procedures, reduce health care costs incurred by survivors through the Victims’ Assistance Program and collaborate on reporting processes through UNC Campus Police. It also raises awareness about resources offered to survivors by Campus Health Services and UNC Hospitals.

Student Advisory Committee to the Chancellor

Approximate Meeting Frequency: once per month unless determined that there are more items of interest to discuss

Description: The purpose of the Student Advisory Committee to the Chancellor (SACC) is to provide a means for a wide range of student constituencies to speak directly with the Chancellor, the Executive Vice Chancellor, the Provost, and the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs in order to peacefully and professionally advance the interests of the students and the university. SACC is composed of 12 undergraduate and graduate students who meet monthly with the Chancellor and meet weekly as a group to represent a broad range of student interests to the Chancellor and to higher university administrators. The Student Body Vice President serves as the chair of the Student Advisory Committee to the Chancellor (SACC).

Student Fee Audit Committee

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Monthly

Description: The committee shall establish its own guidelines for working with the appropriate university administrators to oversee the levying and expenditure of all student fee dollars. The committee will pursue the goals of accounting specific fees for service and projecting long term growth patterns in student fees so that the appropriateness of fee revenue versus state and private revenue can be determined. It shall also be the duty of the committee to supervise the Student Activity Fund Office, and it shall have the power to inspect the financial records of any student organization receiving Student Activity Fee money. Any student may petition any committee member to commence such an inspection.

The Carolina Student Legal Services Board of Directors

The Carolina Student Legal Services Board of Directors meets once a month to discuss ongoing and future issues regarding Carolina Student Legal Services Inc.

Student Library Advisory Board

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Monthly
Description: In an effort to maintain open communication between the student body and the administration of the University Library, the Student Library Advisory Board (SLAB) was created to provide a forum in which students and the library administration can solicit and discuss suggestions from the student body and share feedback and ideas regarding library services, programs, and facilities. SLAB directs the expenditures of the Student Endowed Library fund, which began in 1998 as an initiative to help support library services of particular interest to student users, at that time, namely 24-hour service of the Undergraduate Library.

Student Safety and Security

Approximate Meeting Frequency: usually once per week
Description: The Student Committee for Safety and Security oversees the allocation of the Safety and Security Fee and acts as an advocate for better safety on campus. The members review funding requests for safety related events such as self-defense classes and items such as assault whistles. The committee also works with DPS to improve lighting on campus and to ensure the P2Ps run efficiently. Safety and Security’s goal is to inform every student of his or her right to safety and the means available for preserving this safety.

Student Technology Advisory Board

Approximate Meeting Frequency: Standing Monthly Meeting, 2 hrs

Description: STAB is made up students and representatives from ITS. The advisory board is a sounding board for the students and their technology needs. We discuss issues concerning the computing labs, printing, CCI program, email concerns, IT Help Desk and basically anything else the student representatives bring to the table concerning technology. If a need is brought to our attention and we are not the appropriate group, then we will pass the concern to that group.

Sustainability Advisory Board

Approximate Meeting Frequency: as needed, year round

Description: The Sustainability Advisory Committee, advising the Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, is being constituted as a recognized committee to make recommendations on a more holistic approach to the development and implementation of sustainable policies, practices, research, and curricula across the University. The Committee will recommend long-term sustainability goals for the University and identify the means to achieve them. The Committee will develop a better understanding of existing incentives and disincentives, and propose more effective strategies. The Committee members will champion these strategies and communicate them to each member’s respective area so that all stakeholders take ownership.

University Teaching Awards Committee

Approximate Meeting Frequency: varies; 3-4 per semester

Description: Committee administers the selection of teaching awards for university faculty. The committee receives nominations, evaluates them, observes classes of those nominated, and aids in the selection process.

Additional Information: Most of the student appointees’ work is completed in the fall semester.
