AMEA'S PUBLIC STATEMENT REGARDING THE PASSING OF

MRS. MILDRED LOVING (1940-2008)

May 5, 2008

The Association of MultiEthnic Americans (AMEA) mourns the May 2nd, 2008 passing of Mrs. Mildred Loving at her home in Central Point, Virginia at the age of 68. Mildred Loving, an African and Cherokee-American woman was married to a white man, Richard Loving, who passed away in 1975. Together they took their fight for the right to marry all the way to the Supreme Court, resulting in the 1967 landmark Loving v State of Virginia Decision that struck down laws which still remained in approximately 17 states that were against interracial marriages (http://ameasite.org/loving.asp).

While we are deeply saddened by her death, we honor her legacy by continuing to advocate for multiracial couples, individuals, and families. Our condolences reach out to the Loving Family and all the lives they have touched over the years.

In June 2007, AMEA along with its affiliates and allies, convened in Chicago, Illinois to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Loving Decision (www.lovingconference.com).

This June, please join us as we honor the legacy of the Lovings and the countless number of couples and families that have paved the way before and after them through events planned with the Loving Day project and AMEA affiliate organizations across the country (www.lovingday.org).
