Active Reading Strategies Notes

First, brainstorm at least three things that good readers do when reading to help them understand what they are reading

1.

2.

3.

Now list the ideas of your peers:

QUESTIONING STRATEGIES…

One of the things that good readers do is ask a lot of questions (automatically in their minds) while reading…

However, not all questions are the same – There are different types of questions.

We will refer to four different types of questions…

Abbreviation / Type of Question / Where answer can be found…
RT / Right There / Answer can be found in one place in the text
PiT / Pulling it Together / Answer can be found in a few places in the text … you are gathering the answer from these places
A&M / Author and Me / Answer are not in the text (you would need to ask the author to find the answer)
OYO / On Your Own / Question is NOT specific to the text and yet it is related to the text

Another thing that good readers do is they sympathize, relate to, or empathize with the people they are reading about… this could be mean imagining themselves in another person’s situation, connecting the person to someone else they have read about, or relating the situation to another situation happening (or that happened) in the world … in other words the reader is…

MAKING CONNECTIONS….

There are FOUR main types of connections we will be discussing this year…

Abbrev. / Type of Connection / Definition (Fill this box in as we discuss connections!...) / Your examples
T2S / Text to Self
T2T / Text to Text
T2W / Text to World
