This is a basic, hands-on woodworking class for children with little or no experience. We will use mostly recycled wood and hand tools. The children will construct simple toys and sculptures using basic hand tools, nails, glue, sandpaper, and paint. ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS & LANGUAGE ARTS Heidi Prescott
This year-long course will continue the study of ancient civilization and will pick up with Ancient India then continue onto China, Greece, and Rome. Students will work on their geography skills, study of the land, and its people through a variety of activities including experientials, simulations, analysis of artifacts and primary sources, lecture, cooperative group work, class discussion, reading and writing. By sharing our responses to the books that we select to read together, we will deepen our experience of great literature. We will read some books as a whole class, with others we will break into small groups, or literature circles, based on the students’ choice of several books. These literature circles will allow students to gravitate toward a comfortable reading level as they take on specific roles to facilitate discussion. Students will practice moving from teacher-directed to student-directed learning experiences through taking on these roles. MATERIALS FEE: Cost of books.

CHICKADEES Robin Hawley
Chickadee Readers is a class designed to practice and improve reading skills on the road to fluency. Using poems, readers-theater, games, phonics activities and small group guided reading instruction, we will strengthen reading skills. We will work as a whole group, in small groups, and independently. Students should be able to read short, predictable text. Students will be expected to document 15 minutes of reading at home daily and parents are encouraged to read to their child regularly. We will start each class with warm up exercises followed by working on our penmanship using the Handwriting With Out Tears program. (We will work on form, spacing, starting and stopping spots.) All the hard work will pay off so that when we write our letters to friends and family they will be beautiful. We will also create an address book, stationary and cards. I will bring in different letters written through out the years to read to the children. The children will use other student’s ideas to enhance their own, it’s super fun! MATERIALS FEE: $7.00

MOVING ON WITH WILLOW WRITERS Judith Anne McBride
Inspired by great literature, this class will focus on expanding their writing while honing writing skills. Students will use the writing process of pre-writing, drafting, editing and publishing for writing personal narrative, descriptive and imaginative writing. Instruction of important writing skills and improving writing conventions will happen daily. The goal of this class is to develop a comfort with, enjoyment of and pride in each student’s writing in addition to improving skills. MATERIALS FEE: $5.00

In this class, students will explore the mythology of many different cultures and historical periods. Through read-alouds and independent reading, students will sample a variety of creation myths, heroes' journeys, and wisdom tales. Students will respond in writing to the myths, in a variety of creative ways, such as writing their own myths, setting an ancient myth in modern times, and re-telling myths in their own words. Students will also have the opportunity to prepare class presentations that include drama and art to bring myths to life in the classroom.

Families will be asked to purchase the books the class will be reading. To allow for small group instruction and personal attentions, parents and volunteers are asked to help in the classroom.
