PSALM 100

Good evening. I would like to welcome all the visitors here tonight, and invite you back any time you can come (worship times). I have my Bible open to the 100th Psalm. Our lesson will come from that chapter this evening. We’re here tonight to praise and worship God, and learn more about His word, and what better way to do that than to study a Psalm that is solely about that.

INTRODUCTION

A. A Psalm for giving thanks

a. I love this Psalm because I love to worship and sing

b. It’s short and to the point, and does just that

c. It brings out many wonderful points

B. Authorship not attributed, just one of the collection of many

C. Jewish traditions

a. During festivals and feasts, they would use these Psalms

b. Would often form and march to the temple

c. They would sing, dance, and play instruments on the way

i. David instituted the use of instruments, he loved to praise God

d. So just imagine this being sung as thousands marched to the temple

D. Read Psalm 100

I. MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE!

A.  Make a joyful noise

  1. A happy noise
  2. So elated that we GET to serve God, not HAVE to
  3. Smiles on our faces
  4. A loud noise
  5. Jews were more concerned with volume than harmony
  6. It ought to be loud regardless of how it sounds
  7. Ought to sing loudly even if you can’t sing well
  8. God listens to the heart
  9. We ought to be excited
  10. David is excited to worship (2 Sam. 6:14-15)
  11. It should be no different with us (all our might)

B.  Make it to the LORD

  1. It is Him, and only Him we should serve and praise
  2. Luke 4:8; 16:13 (serve); Ps. 118:28; 150:1 (praise)
  3. And rightfully so. Does he not deserve it?
  4. Not to each other
  5. We’re not doing it to impress one another
  6. yes to edify and encourage (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16)
  7. first and foremost to God
  8. We’re not doing it to impress the world
  9. Not in vain
  10. God does not accept empty worship
  11. Heb. 12:28-29; Ps. 19:14

C.  All the earth!

  1. The world in its entirety (2 Pet. 3:9)
  2. Testimony to the fact that God calls all men to repentance
  3. Jews and Gentiles (Acts 17:30)
  4. God’s love and the message of salvation has no boundaries

II. SERVE THE LORD WITH GLADNESS!

A.  Serve the Lord

  1. Do it with gladness!
  2. Not grudgingly, or resisting
  3. Be prepared and in the right frame of mind
  4. you can’t be glad if you’re half asleep

B.  Come into His presence

  1. How? with singing! (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16)
  2. The gifts of our voices and of song are two of the greatest things God has given us
  3. We should use them to glorify Him
  4. Realize that we ARE in HIS presence (Matt. 18:20)
  5. How glorious a thing it is to know that He is there
  6. pleasure He takes in his people loving and worshipping Him, He smiles down on us
  7. We should be as humble and reverent as possible
  8. We should thank Him for that blessing

III. THE LORD IS GOD!

A.  Know that the LORD, He is God

  1. Our worship should be a knowledgeable one
  2. Know who it is we are worshipping and why
  3. Jesus b/c he saved us
  4. God b/c he created us
  5. Know that our Savior (YHWH) is our Creator (Elohim)
  6. The LORD our God is One (Deut. 6:4-5)

B.  He is our Creator, we are His creation

  1. We did not make ourselves
  2. Thus, we ought not think to highly of ourselves (Rom. 12:3)
  3. We would not exist or have anything w/out Him (Acts 17:28)
  4. He made us (Gen. 1:1)
  5. Thus, He has the preeminence (Col. 1:18)
  6. And He has the right to our worship
  7. And the right to do with us as He pleases
  8. fortunately, He chose to save us, and desires only our praise, adoration, love, and obedience

C.  We are His people

  1. A chosen nation, for His purpose (2 Th. 2:13)
  2. We are His children (John 1:12)
  3. The sheep of his pasture (1 Pet. 2:25)
  4. He cares for us like the shepherd does the sheep
  5. Our pasture is this world until He calls us home
  6. we must not grow to love this pasture too much, for our citizenship is in heaven

IV. ENTER HIS GATES WITH THANKSGIVING!

A. Enter his gates with thanksgiving

a. Psalm physically speaks of the gates of the temple

b. Figuratively, any time we come before Him (Eph. 5:20; Heb. 13:15)

i. Whether that be at church, at home, in car, etc.

c. The first thing we ought to be doing is thanking Him

i. This is reiterated twice in the verse

B. Enter his courts with praise

a. Would have been the courts of the Gentiles

i. We are those Gentiles (Acts 11:18)

ii. Praise Him because we are now included!

b. As we come nearer to Him, we are to praise Him

i. Praising Him with all that we have because our God is AWESOME! (Ps. 33:8; 66:5)

ii. It’s no accident that there’s an exclamation point here, because we ourselves ought to be exclaiming!

D.  Bless His name

  1. To ascribe all goodness, wonder, and power to
  2. Just His name is awesome and worthy of praise and blessing
  3. We bless Him when we thank Him for His mercies

V. FOR THE LORD IS GOOD!

A.  The LORD is good (Ps. 31:19; 33:5)

  1. And nothing but good
  2. He is the definition of good
  3. There is nothing bad about Him
  4. He is perfect, righteous, just, and pure
  5. His goodness manifests itself in two ways:
  6. In His Truth – His word is sure, He cannot lie (Heb. 6:18-19)
  7. In His Mercy – He doesn’t give us what we deserve

B.  His Steadfast Love endures forever

  1. Mercy, Lovingkindness
  2. It never ends, and it never fails (Zep. 3:5)
  3. It stands for all time, beginning to end, eternity, to eternity
  4. It covers all our sins
  5. It is steadfast
  6. It is there no matter what
  7. It is there in all situations, whenever we need it, and whenever we think we don’t

C.  His faithfulness (truth) extends to ALL generations (Ps. 119:90)

  1. Not only for all time, but for all people
  2. Even to us, wretched sinners
  3. He will be with us all to the end
  4. He will judge us all with the same upright hand
  5. Heb. 10:30; 2 Tim. 4:8

CONCLUSION

A.  Thus, I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever!

B.  I will (A, B, C, D, E)!

C.  Isn’t that a wonderful thing to be able to do?

D.  Isn’t God amazing, awesome, and worthy of our praise?

E.  These things (steadfast love, faithfulness) only come to those who are His people, the sheep of His pasture. Day of Judgment wonderful to them.

F.  Will be praising like this in Heaven for eternity. If you want that to be your eternity, become one of His people by being baptized today!

Psalm 100 – Verses

2 Sam. 6:14-15 – “And David danced before the LORD with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod. 15 So David and all the house of Israel brought upt he ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the horn.”

Luke 4:8 – “And Jesus answered him, ‘It is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.”’”

Luke 16:13 – “No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”

Psalm 118:28 – “You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you.”
