Nease High School Mission Statement

The mission of Allen D. Nease High School of Ponte Vedra, Florida, is to provide an excellent, high quality education for a rapidly growing and geographical diverse student population for the northern end of St. Johns County. Our intent is to develop academically capable and socially responsible young adults in a safe, attractive, and stimulating environment, encouraging the highest levels of excellence and professionalism in every area of academic and extra-curricular endeavor.

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide instruction that enables students to accelerate the development of reading and writing skills and to strengthen those skills so they are able to successfully read and write grade level text independently. We will be focusing on reading comprehension, reading fluency, writing, citing textual evidence, vocabulary study, and standards through the use of a variety of literary and informational texts encompassing a broad range of text structures genres, and levels of complexity.

Core Reading Materials

Students will be able to choose from a variety of texts included within the classroom and school Media Center, as well as have the option of choosing their own text with teacher approval. *NOTE that silent reading is a vital component of this course and will be required, along with daily text-dependent reading logs. Other resources that will be used include magazines, newspapers, and test-prep materials.

Class Supply List

  • Paper
  • Pens (blue or black ink only, please) and/or pencils
  • 2” or 3” 3-ring binder (exclusively for Intensive Reading)
  • Dividers (5 inside the binder)
  • Highlighter

*Individual projects may require supplies not listed. Advance notice will be given.

General Classroom Expectations

  1. Students will be respectful of others personal space at all times.
  2. Stay in your seat at all times unless permission by the teacher is given to move.
  3. No food or beverages (other than water) are allowed in the classroom.
  4. The use of personal electronics is prohibited unless for instructional purposes with permission provided by teacher.

Grading Criteria

Formative Assessment - 30%

  • Classwork
  • Exit tickets
  • Reading Plus completion
  • Quick writes
  • Reading Logs

Summative Assessments -70 %

  • Tests(may include writing assessments, advance notice will be given)
  • Quizzes(some may count as formative)
  • Projects

School-Wide Grading Policy

A=90-100 B=80-89 C=70-79 D=60-69 F=50-Below

Test Retakes

Students will have the option to retake an assessment during Power Hour if they scored below a 70%. The students will have the opportunity to earn up to a 70% on their retake.

Make-UpAssignments

It is the student’s responsibility to make up any missed assignments due to absence. All missed assignments will be due the following school day after a one-day absence. In the event of an extended absence, students will be given one day for each missed day to make up assignments. If an absence is long-term, a make-up time frame will be determined following a student/parent/teacher conference (via phone or in person).
