8th Grade Glimpse

Counselor’s Corner: BOX TOP TIME! The deadline for turning in box tops to collect cash for our Student Council is Friday, February 26th. Please bring them to Mrs. Rankin or Ms. Barnes. Eighth grade students will be getting in gear to set up classes for their freshman year of high school. They will be completing the inventory assessments to find their career cluster and then work on picking their classes out. There is a pre enrollment meeting for all eighth grade students and parents on February 10th at 6:30pm in the Library. Please make arrangements to attend.

8th Grade Science: We will be continuing our unit over astronomy. The main topics covered at this point have been Celestial Bodies and Planets. We will be working towards taking our tests over this unit during the week of 2/16-2/19.

8th Grade - Social Studies - Mr. Herron. We will be presenting our projects in front of the class this week. The students have been working hard on their presentations and I am excited to see their work presented in from of the class, there were many interesting topics chosen.

Pre-Algebra: We have completed the unit on geometric relationships. Next week, students will take the Acuity Career and College Readiness test C and he Mobyxmax placement tests.

Algebra 1: We have completed the unit on linear functions. There will be a quiz on Monday over line of best fit, parallel and perpendicular linear functions, and transformations of linear functions.

My digital library contains many resources that students can use at home to practice the skills we are learning in class.

8th Grade-Exploring Agriculture: - Mr. Brock: This week we will continue Unit 2: Introduction to Plant Science. During this unit, students will be exposed to the importance of soil, plant parts and processes, and propagation techniques. We may do hands-on projects with houseplants periodically during this unit. My plan times are Gold 2 and Blue 1. If you have any questions, please contact me by email, .

Power and Construction: This week the 8th graders have started reviewing measuring and weights and measures. They will be testing soon to see what they remember. They also are searching for the perfect plan s for a project for each student to build. Next week we will review safety rules. 8th Health and Physical Education: Next week students in Mrs. Briney's classes will start their Hockey unit, while Mr. Dudley's classes will start their basketball unit. Mr. Dudley currently has a student teacher, Mr. Schmersahl who has also been a coach in our school district. He will be covering Mr. Dudley's classes for a couple months before he moves to the Elementary building. Students will continue their health lessons over Safety. Please remind students to bring clothes and tennis shoes for participation. If you have any questions please feel free to contact either Mr. Dudley or Mrs. Briney. Coach Dudley's plan is Gold2 or Blue 5 and Mrs. Briney's plan is Gold 1 and Blue 5

Vocal Music: The composer of the week is Edward Grieg. Classes have listened to a couple of his pieces and studied his biography. Students continue to work on choral octavos and sight-reading.

8th Grade Band: Please mark your calendars for our Spring Concert which will take place on Tuesday, May 10th at 7:00pm in the East Gym. 8th Grade RISE-Students will continue working on either their Rube Goldberg or Independent Study Projects next week. We will also be continuing our Extempore' curriculum by practicing AHA challenges. In our Conflicts Curriculum next week our lesson is called Who are you? The enduring understanding is-Understanding the positive and negative sides of conflicts may help people make better choices. The guiding questions for this lesson are-What is social cruelty? Why do people bully others?

8th Grade Computer Literacy-Students will continue to focus on the top row keys. They will have a quiz on Thursday over the top row keys. We will begin learning the basic components of PowerPoint including creating and opening presentations, saving and sharing, slide basics, text basics, applying themes, applying transitions, managing slides, printing, and presenting your slide show.

8th Grade Art: The students in this class will continue their animal outline and then transfer these to the final paper. Once this is complete they will begin the color illustrations.

Graphics I: The students in graphics class will continue with their newsletter projects.

Graphics II: The students in Graphics II will continue their advertising project.

8th Grade CA/Reading – Mrs. Lettau- We will start the week taking Acuity. We will also continue spelling. We did plurals and possessives last week, so we will do contractions this week to finish out our apostrophe unit. 8th FACS: Students will begin work on their aprons. Students who are not sewing first will be hand weaving.

Food Science: The students will be discussing energy and how it is used with food. They will be participating in a boiling water lab. Students not in the lab will be working on charting data.

8th Grade Communication Arts: Students will take the 3rd quarter Acuity assessment: Reading: Test on Thursday/Friday over chapters 4-6 of their book. Grammar: Working with verbs. Writing Project: Students in B4 – A.R. writing project is due by Friday, March 4. Projects turned in by February 26 earn 5 points extra credit. A.R.: Students must meet 50 % of their A.R. Goal by Monday, February 8 and 100% of their A.R. goal by Thursday, March 10.
