Welcome to your language arts class! During the year we will study different authors and genres of literature. We look forward to a great year with you and hope that the following information will help you be successful this year. Please read this with your teacher in class and then place it in your binder for future notice
Student Responsibilities:
- Keep an organized and complete binder for English.
- Maintain an agenda to keep up with due dates for homework, essays, and extended projects.
- Ask for work IN ADVANCE when you know you will miss English.
Parent Responsibilities:
- Help keep your child organized for this class and others by checking your child’s agenda and the website. Websitesare updated with class information.
- Establish a gradespeed account to monitor your child’s daily progress. Go to for more information.
- Contact the teacher via email. Email is the fastest way.
- Distribution list - these will be set up the first two weeks of school. Please check your email! If you are not receiving updates by week three, please contact your teacher.
- Encourage your child to do his/her best.

Grading Policy:Test Dates:
- Daily work = 30%Major Grade Tests – Tuesdays and Fridays
- Tests, essays, projects, major writing = 60 %Vocab and Spelling Quizzes - Fridays
- Homework = 10%
Late Work Policy:
Major Grades
One day late 10 pointdeduction
Second day late20 point deduction
Third day late 30 point deduction
General Retake Policy
Any major grade scoring lower than a 70 is eligible for a retake. The student may earn enough points to bring that failing grade to a 70 but not higher than a 70. An additional assignment or activity will be required for the student to complete before a retake may be given. Vocabulary and Spelling quizzes are the only daily grades that are eligible for a retake.
Vocabulary Workshop Quizzes
- Flash cards must be created for each of the 20 words to be eligible for a retake. Retake dates will be written both on the website and on board in class. These dates are non-negotiable unless students are absent, family emergency, etc. It is the student’s responsibility to establish a new retake date.
- Cards must be brought on the day of the retake date and shall include:
- Definition of the word
- Synonyms, antonyms
- Part(s) of speech
- Context sentence

- Mead Composition book - no spirals, please.
- Packed pencil bag (mechanical pencils, pens, scissors, glue, map pencils and markers)
- Binder with ample notebook paper and dividers
