8th Grade Courses

Pre-Algebra (210003)

Algebraic expressions and linear equations are applied throughout a thorough review of arithmetic skills such as operations on integers, fractions, decimals, percentages, and radicals. Students explore relations and functions using equations, tables, and graphs. Topics on statistics and geometry extend foundational concepts in preparation for high school courses. Problem solving and real-life uses of math are emphasized throughout the course.

Advanced Pre-Algebra (210004)

This course covers the same content as the pre-algebra course but topics are much more in depth and usually require higher-level thinking daily. Students who are on track to take Algebra I freshman year generally take this course. In order to register for this course, a student must have an overall 90 average in 7th grade math. All students who are seated in this course will be in the Ready range of their ACT Aspire test and will be at or above grade level on their STAR math benchmark test.

8th Grade English (200003)

In this course, students will work to acquire the language foundation necessary to build meaningful, varied, and increasingly complex pieces of writing. Students will master grade-appropriate skills in writing and speaking and will analyze and emulate (not plagiarize) exemplary mentor texts. In addition, students will increase vocabulary strength through the study of language as well as enriched outside reading.

8th Grade Advanced English (200004)

In advanced English 8, students will work toward the same goals as the standard English course, but they will receive accelerated instruction in grammar, writing, and reading. Because of the nature of the advanced course, students will achieve learning goals in an accelerated fashion and will be held to elevated levels of achievement.In order to register for this course, a student must have an overall 90 average in 7th grade English. All students who are seated in this course will be in the Ready range of their ACT Aspire test and will be at or above grade level on their STAR reading benchmark test.

Physical Science (220003)

Physical Science concentration on the composition and properties of matter; examining forces and predicting and developing explanations for changes in motion; the conservation of energy, energy transformations, and applications of energy to everyday life; and types and properties of waves and the use of waves in communication devices with integration of science and engineering practices.

Advanced Physical Science (220004)

Advanced Physical Science concentration on the composition and properties of matter; examining forces and predicting and developing explanations for changes in motion; the conservation of energy, energy transformations, and applications of energy to everyday life; and types and properties of waves and the use of waves in communication devices with integration of science and engineering practices.In order to register for this course, a student must have an overall 90 average in 7th grade science. Social Studies (230011)

World History is a course in which students are instructed in the various elements of world history with an emphasis placed upon how civilizations began and flourished throughout different regions of the world.

Physical Education (240001)

Physical education is a course that focuses on developing physical fitness and the ability to perform and enjoy day-to-day physical activities. A class where children develop skills necessary to participate in a wide range of activities, such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton, etc. Physical education classes prepare children to be physically, mentally, and emotionally active, fit, and healthy into adulthood.

Business Technology Applications (450006)

BTA is designed to assist students in developing proper keyboarding techniques and technological proficiencies in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, communications, Internet use, ethics, and careers using technology applications.

Intermediate Chorus (280060)

Intermediate chorus is used to push them past the beginning level of chorus. They will learn to sing 2 part and 3 part music. This will be used on older music for study and the introduction to newer music. They will learn to sight sing 2 part and 3 part music in class. They will perform at 2 different concerts and also competition in the spring. The class requires a fee of $38 per student for travel, music and t shirt of their own design.

Marching Band (Fall)/Concert Band (Spring) (280039AE)

Students who have completed at least one year of beginning band will be eligible to move to Marching Band/Concert Band. The Marching Band requires some practices as well as performances outside of the school day (Games, Parades, and Contests).The Concert Band is made up of students who were in marching band as well as students who may have been in a fall sport and can now participate.The class meets every day.The Concert Band requires some practices as well as performances outside of the school day.This is considered an Extracurricular Activity.

Beginner Band (280039AD)

Students will learn to read music, play a wind or percussion instrument, and perform in a couple of concerts in preparation for Intermediate Band or Marching Band. This group requires some at home practice as homework, but very little or no after school practices.
