8th Grade Civil War Project Guide Sheet: Hall of Fame

*All Projects require a minimum of 8 sources, at least 3 of the 8 MUST be books.

**All Projects require a correctly formatted MLA style Bibliography page listing all sources used (including websites used for pictures/images).

Situation: You have been asked by the National Museum of American History to posthumously nominate 10 individuals from the Civil War era for inclusion in a new wing of the museum, the American Civil War Hall of Fame, highlighting the contributions of people to American history. The museum is looking for creative, thought provoking information to present to the multitude of tourists who visit the museum every day. Not all submissions will be selected so make sure your research discusses the impact of each of the individuals you chose and is presented in an inviting and creative way.

Task: Identify 10 key individuals who had a major impact on the US during the American Civil War. Create a visual presentation identifying the importance of each person during the 1860s. Rank each person based on the level of importance or influence you think they had on their respective side. Prepare a 2-3 minute speech for the museum committee justifying your #1 choice.

Hall of Fame Requirements:

1.  This project must be completed independently.

2.  Must be Google slides

3.  Identify 10 famous (or infamous) people of the American Civil War era including:

a.  At least one picture/image of each person

b.  Min. 5 sentence description of the importance/ impact of each person during the time period

4.  Create a rating scale to rank each person based on the impact you think each person had on the US or their respective side (North/South) during the Civil War time period.

For example, #1 = most important/influential ---- #10 least important/influential.

5.  “Top Ten” – rank each person based on their importance or influence on their respective side during the Civil War.

6.  Justify your rankings – explain your reasoning for each ranking. Why did you rate each person the way you did? Be sure to use specific facts and details from your research to support your choices. (3-5 sentences)
