Sing to the Lord a new song, Alle- | luia,*

All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation | of our God.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, | all the earth;*

break forth into joyous song and sing | praises!

Glory be to the Father and | to the Son*

as it was in the be- | ginning,*

Collect 156

O God, You make the minds of Your faithful to be of one will. Grant that we may love what You have commanded and desire what You promise, that among the many changes of this world our hearts may be fixed where true joys are found; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament Reading- Isaiah 12:1–6

You will say in that day:“I will give thanks to you, O Lord, for though you were angry with me,your anger turned away, that you might comfort me.Behold, God is my salvation;I will trust, and will not be afraid;for the LordGod is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.”

With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day:“Give thanks to the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted.Sing praises to the Lord, for he has done gloriously; let this be made known in all the earth.Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.”

Gradual Ps. 45:2a; 110:1

You are the most handsome of the | sons of men;*

grace is poured up- | on your lips.

The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my | right hand,*

until I make your enemies your | footstool.”

Epistle – James 1:16–21

Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness that God requires. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

Alleluia 156

Holy Gospel – John 16:5–15

[Jesus said:] “But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

Prayer of the Church

Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs.

For the Church, that God’s Word, proclaimed in her richly, would keep her faithful and sustain her life, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the world, that as the Father and the Son have sent the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, to convict the world concerning sin, righteousness and judgment, we may be given His grace to believe and confess our sins, live by faith in Jesus Christ alone and rejoice in God’s victory over the enemy, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the enemies of the Church, for those who hate us and for all unbelievers, that God might bring them to repentance and faith, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For every Christian in every place, that God keep His children in the righteousness of Christ put on them in Holy Baptism and that they live their lives trusting in His unfailing promises, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For those who toil, those who serve this congregation and for all who teach God’s Word through art and song, that they may work to show forth the beautiful inheritance of eternal life in Christ Jesus with all the skills God has imparted to them, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the sick, the suffering and all who need our prayers, especially forHarold Bair,Bill Bryant, Jerry Cook, Kim Koss-Ehrstine, Maggie Karner, Jordan Myers, Marcia Overfield, Ronald Stein, Kenneth Vandre, and Janet Walker, that God visit and relieve them, comfort and sustain them, and strengthen their trust in the Lord Jesus in the midst of sickness, sorrow or death, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For those struck by recent tragedy and upheaval, especially for those in Nepal and Baltimore, that the hearts of God’s people not despair but that He sustain and comfort us, that the efforts to care for the injured, to console the bereaved, and to protect the helpless may find success, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For those celebrating birthdays and weddings anniversaries, especially for Patricia Hokenson, Jennifer DeVoe, Jess and Toni Lohr, Katherine and Benjamin Studebaker, that God would continue to bless them and draw them ever closer to Him, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

For the weakest among us, young and old, that God display His strength in defense of every little one and every aged one and that He teach His Church to fearlessly speak in their defense, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy.

Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen!
