PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hello All,
Hope this finds everyone well.
Once again we’re closing on the end of another club year. The last event of the calendar year is our back to back match shows held at MemoryPark in Newton. If you need to work an event to fulfill your requirements for extra privileges or attend a meeting, this is your last chance! Contact Elisabeth Henry ASAP!
Our judges for the match will be Nancy Boyle and Jackie DeAngelo. Bring your pups and your dogs for practice and support your club and these fine ladies at the same time. As always, it’s a great site with plenty of shade and a relaxed fun way to spend some time with friends. Further details are on the club website, under the calendar tab.
Our May meeting was an informative presentation on what we can do to help our senior Labs. Thanks to Patty for putting that together. If anyone has any ideas for topics they would like to see covered at one of our meetings, please contact Patty Snow.
Our Specialty is quickly approaching and I’d like to remind everyone to contact Donna Sevchuk (hospitality), Corey Anger (raffle) and Sharon Celentano or Laurie Muirhead (Show coordinators) and let them know what you might be able to bring for the hospitality and raffle tables as well as what help you might be offer during the show….it doesn’t require all day, but if a few people are around to help with set up and clean up and offer the folks manning tables a little break, it would be much appreciated and helps keep the day moving and organized. Again details are posted on our club calendar page. Let’s make this year even better than last!
Last but not least, it’s DUES renewal time and this year we have a cutting edge way to do it….well, not really cutting edge, but if you want to send your notice and pay your dues electronically, you can! Thanks Fran Pidgeon & Laura Dedering for getting that all set up! Remember folks, dues are due by August 31st as our club year is Sept 1st to August 31st.
I look forward to seeing you all, either at the match or the point shows.
Enjoy the rest of your summer; the way time is flying we’ll be shoveling snow in no time!
Donna

Editors Note:
It is with much pleasure that I would like to introduce our new column!
In The Dog House with Michael Silva
As Labrador breeders, we all talk about the “bad” dog gene. Some of us debate over the validity of EIC. Many of us have heated discussions over TVD and its form of inheritance. For those of us that have been around forever, you have to remember when PRA hit the scene it took on a life of its own!
As I sit at my desk in my office and look across the drive at my dogs frolicking about in their paddocks, I often wonder why we don’t talk about the most common “bad” dog gene of them all. Most of you reading this will think I am talking about the gene that we can eliminate from our breeding program in one or two generations. Sorry to disappoint you, but you couldn’t be farther from what I am thinking!
You see, for many years I have professed that each of us, humans that is, have the inherited “bad” dog gene. What else would drive us to:
- Look excessively online for that perfect new property to build your dream dog kennel and not have a care in the world about the house as long as the roof doesn’t leak;
- Willingly scoop poop for multiple dogs, sometimes fifteen to twenty or more; in the heat of the summer and in the dead of winter (sometimes chipping ice poop more than 30 feet in the air!);
- Stay up until wee hours of the night and into the next morning watching one of our girls pant in a box;
- Strategically stack a palette full of dog food, that is 900 pounds in total, in our garage or kennel building in hopes little rodents won’t have their next meal;
- Juggle money in our checking accounts to pay for dog show entry fees as who needs electricity when you could have the next big specialty winner;
- Spend thousands of dollars on repro vets to get that litter that is going to put our names on the infamous Labrador map;
- Shop for pants and/or a dress that have the perfect pockets to hold that gross smelling piece of bait our dogs love so much;
- Think that Muck boots were the latest fad and that everyone had a pair in their closet;
- Stay in raunchy hotels and hope there is a descent piece of lawn to ex the dogs so they don’t poop in their crates;
- Park the RV in a fairgrounds parking lot and spark up the BBQ as if we were looking at a river;
- Travel up to 16 hours to sit around a taped off piece of lawn and watch people run around in a triangle and circle with a dog at the end of a leash.
Think about it… If we didn’t have the “bad” dog gene we would be:
- Sitting on the beach in the Caribbean with a little umbrella drink waiting for Ramon to bring us that refill;
- Strolling down the Seine on a little river boat and wondering where our next cappuccino was coming from;
- Shopping at Macy*s, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, and Nordstrom’s for that new outfit or suit with not a care in the world where the pockets were or if there were any;
- Putting money into savings so that we could add that new sun room or save up for a rainy day;
- Eating out at the fanciest restaurants and dine on the most beautiful cuisines you have ever seen;
- Taking a camping trip and park the RV in a beautiful state park or campground that overlooks the shore;
- Traveling to see our relatives for the holidays without a care in the world about who is going to watch the dogs.
My mom always said to us kids, “To each his own!” However, she and my Dad never totally quite understood my obsession with dogs as I grew older; even though they bought me my first one to show. My non-dog friends (yes some of us have them) have been told it’s the puppy breath; that, of course, they can agree with. I have also said it is the thrill of winning at a dog show; most ask, “Do you win money?” and when I reply they shake their head. In the end, all I can come up with to tell everyone is that I have the “bad” dog gene. Luckily for me you all have it too!
See you at the next specialty…
Michael
