Objective:

8.2d.1 TSW interpret and evaluate falling action in texts.

TSW read and comprehend Ch 13 of The Giver.

Materials:

Pen, paper, notes, worksheet, The Giver

Do Now: (10 min)

Write down the exposition, rising action, and climax of The Three Little Pigs.

Set: (5 min)

TTW review the previous period’s lesson.

Friday we reviewed grammar with Ms. Francis. Who can tell me when we use a colon, semicolon, name the words that act as conjunctions, an example of an interjection?

TTW state the objectives.

This period you will interpret and evaluate falling action in texts and will read and comprehend Ch 13.

TTW relate the lesson to the students’ lives by involving the students.

What would happen if The Three Little Pigs ended after the climax? Would it still be an enjoyable story? Why or why not? Would you feel like you got a complete sense of the story? Why or why not?

Procedure: (7 min)

TTW define falling action by putting the definition on the board.

Falling Action includes events after the climax. These events lead to the resolution and start tying up loose ends.

TSW copy the definition.

TTW go over the falling action in The Three Little Pigs.

Guided Practice: (20-25 min)

TTW give the students a copy of Little Red Riding Hood.

TSW read by popcorn reading and highlight the exposition in yellow, the rising action in orange, the climax in green, and the falling action in red.

TTW make sure the students are highlighting the correct areas of the story.

Individual Practice:

TTW give the students a short story.

TSW highlight the falling action in the story.

TTW collect the worksheets.

The Giver Guided Practice:

TTW ask the students about some of the rising action that we have read in The Giver.

TTW pass out the reading worksheet.

TSW begin to read Ch 13 of The Giver-popcorn style as a class.

TSW answer the worksheet as we read. TSW raise their hand when they find the answer.

TSW continue with Ch 14 if time allows.

Closure:

TTW restate the objectives.

This period you interpreted and evaluated falling action in texts.

You also read and comprehended Ch 13 of The Giver.

TTW review the lesson.

Informal: TTW walk around to make sure the students understand the material during independent practice.

Formal: TSW turn in a worksheet for a grade. TSW be formally assessed on Friday with a final exam. TTW record both of these grades into the grade book.
