8/1 notes – English I

Today in class we took notes on the parts of speech and created a parts of speech fold using the workbook pages 1-24 as our guide. The fold is homework if it was not finished in class.

Parts of Speech Review

Grammar is like math; it follows a pattern, has rules, and one thing builds to the next. You must know how to add and subtract before you are able to multiply and divide. The same is true in grammar; you must know the parts of speech before you can identify the parts of a sentence, phrases, clauses, and write simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences. You may not have realized it, but you have always learned the parts of speech in a specific order.

· Nouns – person, place, thing, or idea

· Pronouns – rename nouns

· Adjectives – describe nouns and pronouns

· What kind

· How many (typically numbers)

· Which one

· How much

· Articles – a, an, the **** are always adjectives

· A, an – indefinite articles

· The – definite article

· Verbs – tell the action of the noun/pronoun or they link the noun and pronoun.

· Action verb

· Linking verb

· Adverbs – describe adjectives, verbs, and other adverbs

· When

· Where

· How – in what way

· To what extent

· Prepositions – every prepositional phrase is either an adjective phrase or an adverb phrase.

· For example: There is a place in the Bahamas. In the Bahamas is the prepositional phrase telling WHERE – it is an adverb phrase

· Conjunctions – join subjects, verbs, and clauses

· Coordinating conjunctions – AND, OR, NOR, FOR , BUT , YET, SO

· Subordinating conjunctions – WHILE, IF , SINCE, BECAUSE, ALTHOUGH, WHEN, AFTER

· Correlative conjunctions – NOT ONLY… BUT ALSO, EITHER…OR, NEITHER….OR, WHETHER….OR, BOTH… AND.

· Interjections – show emotion; often found in the beginning of sentences, and they are followed by a comma or exclamation point.
