Bio: Tiffany Johr has worked in the healthcare field since 1998 in a variety of different roles and for a variety of different specialties. She currently works in Kansas City, MO for Meritas Health, a 150+ physician group, as the Coding and Reimbursement Manager. In this role she juggles a broad scope of responsibilities for her organization including internal auditing, compliance, managing a team of multi-specialty production coders, and also a team of revenue cycle coders who specialize in claim denial management and process improvement. Tiffany has been a certified coder for 14 years and is currently the 2017 chapter president for the AAPC of Kansas City.

Name with Credentials: Angela Jordan, CPC, COBGC, AAPC Fellow

Bio: Angela has more than 25 years of experience in healthcare and is a Senior Managing Consultation with SCBI, Angela held the position of Coding and Compliance manager for a large physician network, preceded by working as a Coding Auditor for the physicians of a nationwide hospital management organization. She has played key roles in her client’s success with EMR implementation by providing effectual physician and staff training. Angela assists practices with meeting meaningful use requirements and quality measures in order to optimize reimbursement from federal programs. She performs documentation and coding reviews to identify potential compliance risks and then provides practical solutions. Angela is an active member of the Kansas City, MO chapter in addition to being a past member and Chair of the AAPC Chapter Association. She is currently a member of the AAPC National Advisory Board.

Session Summary or goals: Leveling E/M services in an EHR can be perilous. During this session, we will explore the parts of the electronic health record and areas that are questionable for compliance when determining the E/M level for an encounter. We will apply CMS guidance to ROS, PSH, and template information in the EHR to E/M coding, with examples from EHRs.

10:15 E&M Coding: Determining Medical Necessity of a Visit

Name with Credentials: Patti Frank, CPC, AAPC Member of the Year 2016

Bio: Patti Frank is an independent health care consultant and an adjunct faculty at the Research Medical Center Family Practice Residency Program in Kansas City, Missouri where she teaches practice management to third year residents. She has over thirty years’ experience in the health care industry. She is a certified professional coder and a member of the AAPC where she was selected as the Member of the Year 2016. Other honors include selection by the Kansas City Chapter of the AAPC as Educator of the Year 2013 and 2012 and Coder of the Year 2009. She is a member of the Medical Information and Revenue Management Advisory Board at Johnson County Community College.

Her extensive knowledge of practice management, coding and documentation review, physician education and chart audit allows her to bring practical, need-to-know information to her clients. This experience helps her relate to the problems and challenges facing today’s physicians and other health care providers.

Bio: Linda is the Coding & Education Manager for University Physician Associates, a large academic multi-specialty group located in Kansas City, Missouri. Linda is also a part time instructor for Cass Career Center in Harrisonville. She has over 18 years of experience in the medical field, 16 of that coding related. Linda carries 6 certifications with the AAPC. While sometimes she feels it’s equally exciting and frustrating, Linda loves the coding field, and believes it is important to give back. She currently serves as Vice President of the Kansas City Chapter. When she’s not coding, Linda enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, crafting, and volunteering, serving the youth community.

Session Summary or goals: This session will aim to give the attendee a better understanding of coding and documentation of office procedures in the clinical setting and when it is appropriate to bill an accompanying E&M. We will review official guidelines and common in-office procedures such as skin biopsies and excisions, I&Ds, repairs, wound care, and fracture care.
