7Th SWINDON SCOUT TROOP

7Th SWINDON SCOUT TROOP

7th Swindon (Abbey Meads)

Archery and “King” Shooting Competitions 2017

7th Swindon are once again running a Scout Section Archery competition and this year we will also be running the King Trophy Shooting competition at the same time.

All scout troops in Swindon North are invited to come along and take part.

Both events will take place at the Toothill Scout Hut, Toothill Farm, Bodiam Drive on Saturday 17th June. Each team will only need to turn up for a little over one hour. Each team will need to be supervised by an adult for the entire duration they are at the event although this does not need to be a section leader.

Each team can take part in either or both competitions, both will be scheduled for 30mins each.

For ease of scheduling, any team that chooses to take part in both competitions will be attempted to be scheduled consecutively.

The price for each team will be £15 for both competitions or £7.50 for one competition. Each team will consist of between 3 and 5 scouts.

It is assumed that all shooters will have shot an air rifle before and know the basics of range safety and how to load the rifles. All archers should know the basics of Archery.

Winners of both competitions will be entered into the Wiltshire County competition which takes place later in the year, usually October.

As with previous years, scoring will not take place on the day but results will be published before the end of the July.

For the shooting competition each member MUST have a filled in permission form/ Section 21 declaration signed by a parent/guardian.  This is a legal requirement.

No permission form means that you will be not allowed to shoot on the day.

Where siblings are shooting, each will need a separate declaration.

It is the responsibility of all the groups to fill out their activity forms and to send them in to District.

The closing date for this event is 22:00 on Friday 10th June 2017.

Thanks

Extracts from the Firearms Act 1968 ‘Section 21’

(1) A person who has been sentenced (to custody for life or) to preventive detention, or to imprisonment or to corrective training for a term of three years or more (or to youth custody (or detention in a young offender institution) for such a term), or who has been sentenced to be detained for such a term in a young offenders institution in Scotland, shall not at any time have a firearm or ammunition in his possession.

(2) A person who has been sentenced ….. to imprisonment for a term of three months or more but less than three years ( or to youth custody ( or detention in a young offender institution) for such a term), or who has been sentenced to be detained for such a term in a detention centre or in a young offenders institution In Scotland, shall not at any time before the expiration of the period of five years from the date of his release have a firearm or ammunition in his possession.

This means: Section 21 prohibits the possession of a firearm and ammunition (under any circumstances), by any person who has been convicted of a crime and sentenced to a term of imprisonment (or its equivalent for young person’s) of 3 months or more. The prohibition applies in all circumstances, including handling and firing at an approved shooting club or at a clay pigeon shoot where a certificate is not ordinarily required. It also applies to the possession or use of other categories of firearms and ammunition such as AIRGUNS or shot cartridges for which a certificate is not needed. A sentence of 3 months to 3 years attracts a 5 year prohibition, shorter ones no prohibition but a longer one means a life ban.
