7th Grade Mathematics with Mrs. Johnston

2016-17

CLASSROOM GOALS:

  1. All students can learn mathematics well. That doesn’t mean everything will always be easy, and it shouldn’t be, but by working together as students, teacher, and parents, we can learn skills, concepts, and ways to apply what we’ve learned and become successfully numerate people. Take control of your learning. Be actively engaged. Yes, you CAN do math!
  2. All 7th grade mathematics curriculum objectives will be emphasized and a variety of learning activities and assessments will be given in order for students to demonstrate their understanding.
  3. National and Missouri mathematics standards such as problem solving, communication, reasoning, and connections within mathematics and to other subject areas will be incorporated throughout the year. Students will also learn to utilize calculators and other appropriate technology.

EXPECTED CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR:

  1. Be ready to learn and in your spot when the bell rings, but feel free to get up with permission or if you are ill.
  2. Use your manners. Show respect for yourself, others, and our school. We are here to LEARN. i.e. Contribute positively to all classroom activities; stay on task without disturbing or distracting others; genuinely listen to the differences and opinions of others; raise your hand to speak during whole class discussions; actively listen when the teacher is speaking; follow directions the first time given; eliminate put-downs from your vocabulary; take care of all equipment and supplies; etc.
  3. Try new things and take risks. Mistakes are good!
  4. WORK HARD. Never settle for less than your best. Give your best effort and I know you will succeed. I believe in you! Believe in yourself as well. How you view yourself as a learner is SO important! Be positive!

Some extra tidbits you need to know:

  1. Supplies needed: pencils, paper, folder, spiral notebook, scientific calculator (optional – We have Texas Instruments TI-30XS MultiView calculators in our class for student use.)
  2. You will keep a math journal in which you respond to daily entries given at the beginning of class and also take notes and reflect on what you’ve learned.
  3. We will be involved with assignments and activities each day. These will be posted in the classroom as well as on SIS. Your assignments, in-class activities, problem presentations, and journal entries account for approximately 50% of your overall grade. Assessments comprise the other 50% of your overall grade.
  4. Please remember if you are absent, you are responsible for getting your makeup work and returning it within the guidelines found in your student handbook. Keep yourself and your assignments organized. You are expected to complete all work assigned. You may check your progress on the parent/student portals on SIS at any time.
  5. Be careful with equipment in the room. We will be using many items throughout the year. ASK before you use these items. Before anyone leaves the room, all equipment and supplies will be back in their appropriate places.
  6. Extra credit is awarded weekly to those who successfully solve the Problem of the Week, located on the bulletin board in the back of the classroom and on my website. Other opportunities are available from time to time.

I am looking forward to a wonderful year! Approach it with an “I CAN” attitude! Please let me know if you have any questions or if you need any extra help.

Dear Parents,

As my final request at this busy, beginning-of-the-year time, I’d like to ask a favor. I know your time is limited, but I hope you will take this opportunity to help me better know your student and what I can do to help him/her learn best. So . . .

In a million words or less, tell me about your child. 
