7th Grade Honors Math Syllabus

Piedmont Middle ~ An IB World School

2014-2015

Welcome to 7th grade honors math!

This year will be an exciting continuation from your math in 6th grade. You will be working on inquiry-based assignments with partners (and in groups) more than you will work as an individual. It is your responsibility to work your hardest, communicate with your group effectively, and make sure you understand every topic we learn. Enter the classroom with the mindset that you will work your hardest on everything you do. You have a choice: you can do the work to get it done, or you can motivate yourself and challenge yourself to go above and beyond! I will often provide opportunities for you to try more complicated and thought-provoking math problems. Please take those opportunities and expand your knowledge of mathematics!

Listed below are the math units we will investigate this year. Feel free to explore 7th grade standards to become familiar with the topics below before we get to them in class; it will only help you! J

BINDERS/ NOTEBOOKS

A 100-page, 1-subject, college-ruled, spiral notebook is preferred for math class. It should be a size that will accommodate a piece of standard typing paper. If you like binders better, you will need to set it up as closely to the spiral notebook as possible.

Notebooks will be graded throughout each quarter to check for neatness, completion of all work, and other general requirements as outlined in class. Notebooks must be brought to class EVERY DAY or points may be deducted from your daily classroom grade. You will also need to have loose leaf paper available for class work to be turned in. (You may choose to bring in a pack of paper to contribute to the classroom use and not carry it with you daily.)

SUPPLIES

You should bring the following supplies with you daily: math notebook, 2 or more pencils, loose leaf paper, colored pens, dry erase marker(s), glue stick, scissors, highlighters, graph paper, and a calculator. (Students will not be able to use cell phones as a main calculator source. They will be required to have a basic scientific calculator. I recommend you use a TI 83 scientific calculator (solar), but any scientific calculator will do.) All supplies must be brought to class EVERY DAY or points may be deducted from your daily classroom grade.

TEXTBOOKS/ RESOURCES

Students will be studying mathematics from two books: Ready North Carolina and Algebra 1 Foundations Series.

These are being used as resources, but the texts may not be used on a daily basis. Access for the Algebra 1 Foundations Series is found at: www.pearsonsuccessnet.com. Students’ username will be their Piedmont ID number and the password will be: 6-32ASCII. The accounts will be preset for the students.

Please check my wiki: http://eileensusiempalgut.cmswiki.wikispaces.net as well as the 7th grade math wiki: http://piedmontmath7.cmswiki.wikispaces.net for math updates, project links, and other information or resources.

INFORMAL: HOMEWORK/ CLASSWORK/ QUIZZES (35%)

Homework may be assigned daily. Please be sure to keep up with the assignments so you do not fall behind. You should always write your assignments in your planner. Homework will be checked daily for completeness and graded as part of your daily classroom grade. All homework must be done in pencil with all work shown. Homework may be collected and graded at random to check for correctness, completeness, and/ or overall quality of work.

Class work and quizzes will come in many forms. It could be a book assignment, activity sheet, a lab assignment, part of an IB project or task, class participation, online practice site (such as Compass Learning, Castle Learning, etc.), or a “Ticket-Out the- Door” problem.

FORMAL: TESTS/ PROJECTS (65%)

Tests will be given intermittently throughout the unit. There are usually 3-4 tests in a grading period. At least one project will be assigned during a grading period.

Retests will be offered if the student follows teacher interventions. Retests must be taken within 2 weeks of the initial exam. Students will receive the grade from the retest. (A maximum score of 84% can be earned). The prior grade is deleted, even if it is higher. There are no retests on the Quarterly exams, projects, or informal assessments.

GRADING POLICY

Grades are earned, not given. Always turn in your very best work and turn it in on time! The CMS Grading Policy will be used. Late and makeup assignments will be handled as specified by Piedmont IB Middle School’s Student Handbook & Code of Conduct.

B 85-92% Formal Assignments 65%

C 77-84% Informal Assignments 35%
