Researching Securities: Selective Resources
Infomart http://led.uwindsor.ca/infomart
This is a subscription service from the Financial Post. It includes a number of different, but overlapping, databases. Its focus is public Canadian companies. You could use Infomart in various ways:
e.g. Use the Global Search to find all the databases that have information on a particular company. For general company analysis and equity returns, see the Investor reports and the Historical reports.
e.g. Use the sophisticated search engines of some of the specialized, individual databases to select and find information on securities in which you might be interested: New issues (debt and equity), Fixed income, Dividends
e.g. Use Corporate Analyzer - Screens to help you select equities that satisfy multiple criteria
SEDAR http://www.sedar.com
This is a free service from the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA). It contains the documents (annual and interim reports, md&a, etc.) that public companies and investment funds must file with the CSA. It has current, and also historical, coverage as it dates back to the mid-1990s. EDGAR (http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml) is the American equivalent.
Thomson One http://ledproxy2.uwindsor.ca/login/thomsonone
This is a subscription service with global securities information. You must use Internet Explorer and a maximum of 5 people can use it at one time, so log off (top right) when you are finished. Search the company you are interested in and you will get a company overview page. For some areas, there is a lot more in-depth information, e.g. Deals and Capital Structure. The research reports are also extremely useful because they give you outside analysts' views on the company.
Bloomberg Essentials is available in the Odette Financial Markets Lab, 2nd floor, room 208. It contains in-depth data for all kinds of securities. If you are a Finance major, you should probably complete the Bloomberg Certification. It takes approximately 3 hours.
If you are looking for company profiles and articles about your company in academic or trade publications, then try databases such as Business Source Complete (http://led.uwindsor.ca/business-source-complete), ProQuest Business (http://led.uwindsor.ca/proquest-business), GMID (http://led.uwindsor.ca/gmid), Google Scholar (http://led.uwindsor.ca/google-scholar)
