70 days and counting…to Diocesan Convention

Diocesan Convention takes place ina little more than two months – Oct. 22-23 at the Capitol Plaza Hotel and ManerConferenceCenter in Topeka. Here’s the latest information:

Registration deadline is Sept. 24. Remember that all registrations for lay and clergy delegates need to be received by Sept. 24 to avoid the late penalty.

Pray for the Diocese of Western Kansas

Our neighbors in the Diocese of Western Kansas are nearing the completion of their search for a new bishop. Delegates will meet in an electing convention in Hays on Aug. 21.

Nominees are the Rev. Michael Milliken, the Rev. Robert Rodgers and the Rev. Dennis Zimmerman. More information on the nominees is available at

Salina dean to be installed this Saturday

This Saturday Bishop Dean Wolfe will install the new dean of Christ Cathedral in Salina, the see of the Diocese of Western Kansas, and the congregation has extended an invitation to all members of the Diocese of Kansas to attend.

The Very Rev. Benjamin Thomas will be installed as the cathedral’s 17th dean on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Cathedral, 138 South 8th St. in Salina. A luncheon at the MasonicTemple, 336 South Santa Fe, will follow the service.

Clergy are encouraged to wear cassock and surplice with red stoles.

Diocesan Habitat work days planned for Sept. 18-19

The diocesan Habitat for Humanity house in Coffeyville needs your help! Work days designed to allow people from across the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas to help have been set for Saturday, Sept. 18 and Sunday, Sept. 19.

Work will start about 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 18 and will continue until 4 p.m., with an evening barbecue supper planned at nearby St. Paul’s Church. Work will continue on Sunday afternoon, after church services, ending late afternoon.

Volunteers are welcome to spend the entire weekend, and housing in local homes can be arranged for Saturday night. All workers also are invited to church on Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

Youth can register now for the Fall Fun Fest

Youth in grades 6-12 now can register for the annual Fall Fun Fest sponsored by the diocesan youth program. According to Youth Missioner Chad Senuta, the event is meant to be a “fun, welcoming atmosphere for those who have never attended a diocesan youth event or church event.”

It will take place Sept. 18-19 at St. Margaret’s, Lawrence.

As the start of the fall semester begins, remember to send the names of Episcopal students at Kansas colleges to the Rev. Susan Terry, campus missioner, so she can help them stay connected to their church while on campus.

Stephen Ministries workshop offered in Topeka

LowmanUnitedMethodistChurchis hosting a half-day workshop on StephenMinistries on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, 400 SW Drury Lane in Topeka. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. The cost to attend is $15 per person or $50 per congregation.

StephenMinistry is a system for lay caring ministry in a congregation, providing one-on-one Christian care to the bereaved, hospitalized, terminally ill, separated, divorced, unemployed, relocated and others facing a crisis or life challenge.

People notes:

Winnie Crapson, long-time lay leader in the diocese and in the Episcopal Church, died early this morning. She was 85. She held numerous leadership positions in church-related organizations locally and nationally and was an active community volunteer. She was a 50-year member of St. David’s, Topeka. Funeral services are pending, and more information about her life and ministry will be available in the next few days and will be posted on the diocesan website,
