Exemplar: Tangerine pages 35-45

In the novel Tangerine, Edward Bloor portrays Paul and Erik’s relationship as tense and distant. In this section of the novel, Paul is noticing that Erik has a new friend, Arthur. Paul thinks, “I’ve always been afraid of Erik. Now I get to be afraid of Erik and Arthur” (Bloor, 40). It has not been clear why Paul should be afraid of his brother at this point of the novel, but this evidence shows that Erik has a strong personality and that something has occurred in the past to put a strain on their relationship. This is the last sentence in the chapter, which leaves the reader feeling that Erik must have a strong influence on Arthur, and therefore Paul will begin to fear him as well. Thus, it is clear the brothers’ relationship is distant as a result of something Erik has done to Paul in the past.
