6th GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES LESSON PLAN

PRE-PLANNING: KNOW, SO, SHOW / OBJECTIVE. / CONNECTION TO THE (BIG) GOAL.
  • SWBAT analyze the causes of the American Revolution including mercantilism and British economic policies following the French and Indian War. (8.4A)
/ This objective relates to standard 8.4A and relates to the following final assessment question: What was the goal of British mercantilist policies? This objective will ensure that students will be able to successfully answer this on the final test.
ASSESSMENT.
Students will display and explain the causes of the American Revolution webs to their classmates.
Students will display mastery of objective on the daily quiz.
KEY POINTS.
Main causes of the American Revolution
  1. French and Indian War overview (Britain went in to debt after the war against the French)
  2. Taxation of colonies without representation (Boston Tea Party and Boston Massacre)
  3. Rising tensions that resulted in a breaking point (Acts enforced by British troops/ Colonist’s objections to these acts)

LESSON CYLCE: GO / OPENING. (7 min.) / MATERIALS.
  1. 1.Students will be asked to write down and explain the meaning of Patrick Henry’s quote, “Give me liberty or give me death.”
  2. 2.Students will be asked to answer the following question on a sheet of paper “What would make someone say this?”
  3. 3.Teacher will relate students responses to the colonists responses to the unfair laws and treatment that they had to deal with.
Alternative Opening:
  1. 1.Students will watch a 3 minute video clip of the American revolution and write down on a sheet of paper 4 things that they saw in the video that relates to what they already know about the American Revolution.
  2. 2.Teacher will discuss students written responses and discuss that importance of the causes of the American Revolution and the actual outbreak of the Revolution.

INTRODUCTION TO NEW MATERIAL. (15 min.)
  1. Teacher will introduce the 3 causes of the American Revolution by giving a brief description of each cause.
  2. Teacher will introduce 6 new vocab words.
  3. Students will write down the 3 causes and the 6 vocab words on the back of the Causes of the American Revolution.

GUIDED PRACTICE. (25 min.)
  1. Teacher will hand out the Causes of the American Revolution information sheet.
  2. Teacher will read through the first paragraph of this handout and model a think aloud.
  3. Teacher will direct students to underline each cause and mark it with a capital C.
  4. Teacher will direct students to underline three supporting facts and mark it with a circled 1,2,3.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE. (10 min.)
  1. Students will complete the aforementioned process for the remaining two causes of the American Revolution.
  2. Teacher will circulate around the room and check for student understanding and progress.
Extended Guided/Independent Practice
  1. Teacher will direct students to sit with their group partner: Teacher will announce who is to sit with whom.
  2. Teacher will hand out a large sheet of white paper to each group.
  3. Teacher will explain that students will be creating a web of the causes of the American Revolution.
  4. Teacher will model creating a web on a piece of paper.
  5. Teacher will model placing the causes and supporting facts in the appropriate places in the web.
  6. Students will complete this process as the teacher completes it.
  7. Students will complete the remaining 2 causes with their partner.

CLOSING. (10 min.)
  1. Teacher will ask for students to display their webs to the class.
  2. Students will display their webs to the class and explain the causes of the American Revolution.
  3. Teacher will ask other students if the information on the chart is accurate.
  4. Students complete daily quiz.

REINFORCEMENT / HOMEWORK (if appropriate).
