6th Grade MathParent LetterChapter 1

Welcome back to school! In an effort to keep parents and guardians informed of the expectations and content being covered in math class this year, this informational handout will be provided for each chapter. Its intent is to assist in guiding you in ways to support your child in deepening their mathematical understanding.

In each chapter we will spend time reviewing material taught in prior grades as it relates to the standards being taught in sixth grade. Our goal is to keep a balance of skill based learning along with enhancing our student’s ability to problem solve and think conceptually.

Review Material from Prior Grades
4.OA.B.4
Factor pairs and multiples of numbers 1-100. Identify prime and composite.
5.OA.A.2
Simple expressions that record calculations without evaluating.
5.NBT.A.2
Patterns found in zeros and decimal point placement when multiplying or dividing by a power of ten.
New Material for 6th Grade
6.NS.4
Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100;
Find the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12.
Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1–100 with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor. For example, express 36 + 8 as 4(9+2).
6.EE.1
Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole number exponents.
End of Chapter Expectations
1)Skills assessment will cover all of the material from prior grades.
2)Quiz on the new material as it relates to conceptual understanding.
3)Performance-Based Assessment where students will work through a situational problem using the skills taught throughout the chapter.
4)Chapter assessment will cover the following skills:*
  • Finding the greatest common factor of two numbers
  • Writing expressions given situations
  • Writing whole numbers with exponents
  • Simplifying numbers written in exponential form (whole numbers only)
  • Division of whole numbers
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals

*Please note the list above highlights the main skills to be assessed. Teachers may include additional content to meet the needs of their students.
