Reading Comprehension
Read the selection carefully. Remember to look for words you don’t understand. Then write question using complete sentences .

Native American Indian groups in North America lived in different cultural regions, each of which developed its own customs and traditions. A custom is the specific way in which a group of people does something. This can include how foods are prepared, what clothing is worn, the kinds of celebrations and much more. The set of customs developed and shared by a culture over time is a tradition.

A culture’s customs are often determined by the natural resources found in their environment. In the Desert Southwest region, cloth weaving developed as a custom. The area has fewer large animals whose skins can be used for making clothing or blankets. Cloth weaving was a way of meeting the need for clothing without using animal skins. In the Eastern Woodlands area, however, hunting and fishing were daily activities. Since it was easy to get animal skins, developing skills like weaving were less important.

The traditional roles of men and women in the native tribes varied as well. In hunting cultures, men were often away from home during the day to hunt animals for food. Women did many chores around the village while they were gone. In cultures where crops were grown, it was usually the men who tended them.

Folklore was an important part of all Native American cultures. They had no written language. Telling the tribe’s stories orally was the way they preserved them from generation to generation so they would not be lost. The tribe used chanting, storytelling and singing as a way to remember the tribe’s folklore. The stories told the tribe’s history, funny adventures and accomplishments. Folklore also helped unite the people of the tribe.

Religion was an important part of Native American cultures. The celebration of the tribe’s faith and worship often involved special ceremonies. Harvest ceremonies were a common way to give thanks to the tribe’s gods for a good crop. Other ceremonies combined religious songs and dances with social activities. The ceremonies reinforced the people’s trust in their leaders’ ability to provide for their needs

DAY 3

Summarizing: The Gift of the Magi

Read the selection; then answer the questions that follow.

One dollar and eighty-seven cents. That was all she had. And the next day would be Christmas. Della flopped down on the shabby old couch and cried. She wanted so much to get something special for her husband Jim, but she only had $1.87. Della stood and looked at herself in the mirror. Her eyes were red. She didn't want Jim to know she'd been crying. She let her hair fall to its full length, almost to her knees, and began to brush it. Jim loved her soft, long hair. The only thing he liked more was the gold watch that had belonged to his father and grandfather.
Suddenly Della had an idea. She piled her hair on top of her head, put on her old brown jacket and hat, and fluttered out the door and down the steps to the street. She stopped at a door that read: Madame Sofron, Hair GoodsDella ran in and asked, "Will you buy my hair?"
"Take off your hat and let me see," said Madame Sofron. She looked at Della's shiny hair and said, "I can give you 20 dollars."
For two hours, Della went from store to store, looking for a special gift for Jim. At last, she found it . . . a simple gold watch chain. It would replace the old leather strap he now used on his beloved watch!
When Della got home, she fixed her head in short close-lying curls. She looked in the mirror, satisfied with the new look. She had dinner ready by 7 o'clock, but Jim had not come home. Della began to worry; he was never late. At last she heard him come up the steps. The door opened and in walked Jim. "You've cut off your hair!" he said sadly when he saw Della.
"I sold it," said Della. "But I'm still me, aren't I?"
"Of course," Jim said softly as he took a package from his coat pocket. "But if you'll unwrap this package you'll see why I am sad."
Della's fingers tore at the string and paper. Inside she found a set of combs she'd once admired in a shop window. They were beautiful, with jeweled rims that would have looked magnificent in her handsome, long hair.
"Oh, Jim, how lovely," she cried. "I shall wear them when my hair grows. It grows fast. But see," she added happily, "I have a gift for you!"
Della held out the watch chain in her open palm. "I hunted all over town to find it. Give me your watch. I want to see how it looks on it!"
Instead, Jim sat on the couch and began to laugh. "Oh, Della," he said, "I sold my watch to get the money to buy your combs!"
Della sat beside him and together they laughed. They were happy, yet sad, to know that each had given up a prized possession for the love of the other. It was a special Christmas that year, a day filled with love.

b. / Della is sad because she doesn't have much money to buy a gift for Jim.

DAY 4

THE IDITAROD TRAIL DOG SLED RACE

The “Iditarod” is a dog sled race that is held every year in Alaska in March. Dog sled racing is a sport, and the Iditarod is one of the most difficult races.

In a dog sled race, a group of dogs pull a sled across the snow, guided by a person who stands on the sled behind the dogs. The race may be short (called a sprint race) or long. In the Iditarod, the racers take about ten days to cover

a distance over 1150 miles (1,852 km).

Dog sled racing is a type of mushing. Mushing refers to any type of dog pulling any kind of transport across the snow. Mushing is used to move materials (including the mail) over snow-covered ground that cars, trains, and other

transportation cannot get over. People who drive dog sleds

are called mushers. In mushing, dogs are harnessed, or hooked up, to the sled. There may be only one dog or many dogs. The number depends on how much is being pulled and how far, the type of ground, and the reason that the dog is pulling. The type of dog also depends on the load and the purpose. If the load is heavy, more dogs are used. If it is important to go far, then strong dogs are used. If it is important to go fast, dogs that can run very quickly are used. If the team is big, it’s important that the dogs be calm and able

to work in groups. In the Iditarod, a team of twelve to sixteen dogs pulls a single person for a long distance as quickly as possible. People have different ideas about the best combination of number, strength, speed, and temperament.

Although the Iditarod is watched by veterinarians to make sure that the dogs

are healthy, there are no specific rules about the types of dogs used. A group

of poodles have even run in the Iditarod!

The Iditarod is not an easy race for the mushers or the dogs. There are wild

animals and bad weather. The race is very expensive: the cost of taking care

of the dogs and all the race materials is more than the first place prize. However, people who love dogs and dog racing enjoy the chance to work with dogs and to race against other people with the same interests.

2. What is mushing?

a. It is the kind of snow the dogs race across.

b. It is pulling a sled.

c. It is using dogs to carry things across the snow.

d. It is a synonym for dog sled racing.

3. According to the article, which of these are factors in choosing dogs

for a dog sled race?

a. strength, speed, and mood

b. weight, warmth, and high tempers

c. warmth, friendliness, and teamwork

d. strength, tirelessness, and warmth

4. Using clues in the article, what does temperament mean?

DAY 5

Welcome To Oregon

Story By: Andrew Frinkle

style

I live in Oregon. It is a Northwestern state, near Canada. Oregon is famous for the Pacific Ocean, forests, the Rocky Mountains, hazelnuts, lumber, and Crater Lake! It is the 9th largest state and the 27th most populous. You might know some of the major cities, like Portland, Eugene, Salem, and Gresham. The state capital is Salem. Now that you know some of the basic facts about Oregon, let me tell you a little more about my state.

Oregon had several Pacific Northwest Indian tribes living there when the Spanish first visited the area that would become Oregon. The French and then the British held the land. In the 1840s, the Oregon Country was actually led by their own government, until it was annexed by the United States.

The famous Oregon Trail for settlers led to the expansion of settlements in the area and eventual statehood. Oregon is located just beneath Washington, making it one of the northernmost states on the Pacific Ocean. It has a long coastline on the ocean, and inland you find many forests leading up into the Rocky Mountains. These are the three major environments in the state: coast, forest, and mountains.

There are also rich farmlands.

Oregon produces almost all of our nation’s hazelnuts. Cattle, dairy, and cranberries are a few other agricultural products Oregon produces. Due to its location on the coast, of course fishing is a huge deal. With the forests, timber and lumber is a big industry. Oregon led the nation in softwood lumber production. With all this wood getting cut down, is it a surprise to know that Oregon is The Beaver State?

Oregon isn’t so well known for sports as many other states, but they do have a professional soccer and a professional basketball team based in Portland. With all the natural beauty, Portland is a great place to get outside. You can fish, hike, climb mountains, and do all sorts of things outside. Oregon is interesting because it has no sales tax! Only 5 states have no sales tax.
