Sixth Grade News
Saturday School will be held this Saturday January 26, 2013 at 8am until 11:45 am. All students attending must be in full uniform from shirt to shoe!
There will be a dance hosted by The Hornets Go to Europe this Friday from 2:10 until 3:45. The cost is $5.00 and it includes a full dress down.
Awards Day- This Thursday January 24, 2013 at 8:45 am. Invitations were given out to all students receiving an award!!!!
Hapeville is hosting its first ever Father-Daughter Dance Friday February 22, 2013. The cost is $25 per father/daughter and $10 for each additional daughter deadline for payment is February 8, 2013. See flyer for additional details!!!!
WERE PLAYIN BASKETBALL ----- WERE PLAYIN BASKETBALL
Please come out and supportOUR HORNETS!!! We are in the 7th basketball season and they are doing great, both teams are 2-0.
The next game will take place this Wednesday at Paul D. West Middle School. Girls play at 5pm and boys at 6pm.
The last home game of the season will be played this Friday at the Hapeville Recreation Center. The Hornets will take on Camp Creek Warriors, game time 5pm for the girls and 6pm for the boys. PLEASE come out and support OUR HORNET'S!!! LET’S GO HORNET'S!!!!!
Math News
Math tutorials will be held every Tuesday from 4pm until 5pm. Students are encouraged to bring a snack!

Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the Writing Process and the different techniques used to generate ideas. Students will also discuss central ideas, themes, and developing ideas through the reading of the short story “A Worn Path”.
Students will:
Ø To learn about the stages of the writing process.
ØTo practice techniques for generating ideas such as brainstorming, free writing, WH-questions, and clustering.
ØTo understand the difference between revising and editing.
ØDetermine theme, central ideas and providing summaries of a story.

ØWEB-SITE is CURRENTLY UPDATED. Please use the website as a tool to help your student stay on task and prepared for daily concepts.
ØWE have a student-teacher, Ms. Lyons, in our class this semester. She will be teaching the class for four weeks under my supervision. Let’s welcome Mrs. Lyons to our class.
ØWe will be reading the book, Hatchet during the month of January and February. We have a few books as a class set, but I would like for the students to rent the book for the library of get a copy of the book for their own personal use
ØTutoring Days: Afterschool tutorials will be offered on Mondays and Thursdays from 4:00 until 5:15. Parents need to make sure that the students have transportation from tutorials and are picked up no later than 5:30 PM. Afterschool and Saturday School tutorials are NOT MANDATORY. It is a resource for extra help for students that need some. Second Semester afterschool tutorials will begin Thursday, January 17th.
ØWe need materials for our class. Please bring in Expo Markers (all colors), colored copy paper, expo board cleaner, cleaning cloths, Kleenex, paper towels, pens (blue, black and red), and 3-subject notebooks.
ØWe are NOW taking order Common Core Practice workbooks. The books cost $10. The deadline for ordering is Friday, February 1st. Books will be ordered on the February 4th and it will take a week to get the books in. ALL STUDENTS WILL NEED TO HAVE THEIR BOOK BY FEBRUARY 15th.If you have any questions concerning the book, please contact Ms. Evans.

Please parents encourage students to review daily concepts for at least 30 minutes each day. This includes notes, lesson packets, extended lesson materials, etc. This will help them learn the material and be prepared for the next day’s lesson.

SCIENCE: This week in Earth Science we will be reviewing chapter 14 vocabulary on Tuesday and taking the vocabulary quiz on Wednesday. We will also be completing lessons 5, 6, 7 & 8 in the CRCT Coach Books. There will be a test over Lessons 1-8 in the CRCT coach Book early next week.
PE: This week in PE we will be covering the muscles and the bones. We will also be taking a test on health on Wednesday. This will continue for the next two weeks

-This week we will finish readingThe Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobeby C.S. Lewis. It is recommended that students have their own personal copy; however, it is not required.
-Many students have still not brought their composition notebooks to class. Students were reminded tobring a NEW (empty) composition notebookwith them for the 2ndsemester. This was listed on the supply list at the beginning of the year and will be counted as a grade. We are using a new format this semester and students will keep their notebooks in my classroom.
-Monday: Dr. Martin Luther King Day – national holiday, no school
-Tuesday: Irony – Ch. 13-14
-Wednesday: Allegory – Ch. 15-16
-Thursday: Archetype – Ch. 17
-Friday: Dictionary Drill – Study for Exam 3 over novel
Reading Homework:
-Reading logs have been changed – we are focusing on Nonfiction this semester. Examples are posted on the teacher website and edmodo. They will be due weekly online via Edmodo or email ()
This week in Enrichment:
Students will complete A Kids Guide to Money. All students have been given a packet. It will be due on Wednesday for two grades.
We will introduce the economic way of thinking.
All students should have a composition notebook, pens (green and black or blue), and sharpened pencils.

Reading- Reading Logs are due each Monday! Our next reading log is due on Monday the 28th. Please have your student stay after school on Tuesday for tutoring if they do not understand format. We went step by step over an example on Friday the 18th. Students must email me the submissions for credit.
We will begin reading On My Honor tomorrow. Please ask your student to summarize what we are reading each night for you.
Math- Order of operations review and we will begin proportions problems.
