6th Grade Glimpse

Counselor’s Corner: This month, Student Council is organizing a food drive to benefit the Higginsville Food Pantry. Students are encouraged to bring in as many canned goods as possible from November 16-23rd, grades will be competing with each other. Students can turn in canned goods to the designated teacher that will be listed on the flyers at school. For more information please contact .

Science: This week we will warp up our atoms unit with a test Thursday, 11/19 (gold) and Friday, 11/20 (blue). Students should be able to identify the parts of an atom. Student should also be able to recognize and use the parts of the periodic table. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Reading: Reading logs are due on Nov. 16th. We will be finishing our study of literary elements this week and will now be applying the literary elements we learned about to some short stories from our Literature textbook. All 6th grade classes meet on Blue day and we will visit the library every Blue Wednesday, in order to take AR tests and check out/renew books. 6th Grade Math: Students will be wrapping up their Decimals unit this week. Students in B2 will learn how to divide by decimals and interpret the quotient in word problems. Students will take their test on Tuesday, November 24th. Students in G1 and G3 will learn how to divide decimals by whole numbers and then review on Thursday. Their test will be on Monday, November 23rd.

Accelerated Math: Students will take their Decimals test on Monday this week. Students will then start Chapter 4 on Wednesday, learning about prime numbers, factors, prime factorization, and greatest common factor. Communication Arts: Spelling Lesson 6 will begin on Monday for B2 and B4 with the test on Friday. The Pronoun Test is tentatively scheduled on Wednesday for B2/B4 and Thursday for G5. We will continue utilizing the writing process to create text. Reminder: All homework assignments that receive a grade below a C may be redone for half credit. Assignments must be asked for that day and are due the next class time. Encourage your student to take advantage of this opportunity if needed.

Social Studies: This week we will begin chapter 3 over the Ancient Israelites. This chapter focuses heavily on vocabulary terms so we will be reviewing these often thought the chapter. If you have any questions my email . My plan time is 9:28 to 10:52 on both Gold and Blue Days.

FACS: The students will begin working in the kitchen. They will baking monkey bread and making frog eyes this week. There is a $7 fee for this class for the cost of their sewing project. Please have students return their $7 ASAP so I can get the projects ordered.

Vocal: Students are preparing music for the Winter Concert. This concert will be held on Monday, December 14 at 7:00 p.m. in the East Gym.

Band: Our first concert will be on Monday, December 14th at 7:00pm. Please make sure your student has a nice pair of black pants (girls may wear a skirt), and pair of black dress shoes, and has paid for a blue music shirt. These will be distributed in class the week before our concert. If you need help obtaining any of these items, please contact me prior to the concert and I will be happy to help!

RISE: Students know their final presentation dates for their independent study projects and Scratch projects and are working towards finalizing them for their presentations in December. In our Conflicts curriculum our Enduring Understanding is: Understanding the positive and negative sides of conflicts may help people make better choices. The guiding questions with this lesson are: What is debate? Why are debates a good way to discuss two-sided issues?

Health and Physical Education: Mr. Dudley's class will continue their handball unit and Mrs. Briney's class will continue their volleyball unit. Students finished their Clearasil program covering self esteem and skin care. Students were sent home with a sample of face wash free from the program. Health Enrichment: This week students finished their lesson over Alcohol and began discussing addiction and feeling the pressure for using drugs and alcohol. Next week students will continue to cover these topics. We are nearing the end of the chapter and soon will be having a test over the chapter. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Briney.
