6th Grade Glimpse

January 11 – January 15

Science: Next week we will continue our human body systems unit! Students should be able to list and briefly describe the function of the skeletal and muscular systems. We will end the week by making connections and tying together how all these body systems work together to maintain homeostasis. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. . Reading: We have started our nonfiction unit and will be continuing it this week. Reading logs are due January 20th. All 6th grade classes meet on Blue day and we will visit the library every Blue Wednesday, in order to take AR tests and check out/renew books. Math: G1, G2, and B2 will compare and order fractions, have a review day and then test on Thursday or Friday over fractions.

B5 will be adding and subtracting multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.

Communication Arts: Spelling Lesson 8 will begin Monday for B2 and B4 with the test on Friday. We will also be working on using details from text to support constructed response answers and editing as well. Reminder: All homework assignments that receive a grade below a C may be redone for half credit. Assignments must be asked for that day and are due the next class time. Encourage your student to take advantage of this opportunity if needed.

Social Studies: This week we will be covering Athens and Sparta along with their government and how their societies were structured. If you have any questions my email is . My plan time is 9:28 to 10:52 on both Gold and Blue Days.

FACS: The students will be proper sewing technique the parts of the sewing machine. There is a lab fee of $7 that will need to be turned in by Friday, January 8th.

Keyboarding: Mrs. Sellman: Welcome to Keyboarding! I am looking forward to having your child for third quarter. Your student will need a folder for this class. Please sign and return the class syllabi. During the nine weeks of this course you will see very little homework unless it is to study for a quiz. All lessons are taught and completed in class. There are however many on-line typing programs and/or games that are great for practice. Over the next few weeks students will learn how to identify and accurately demonstrate correct keyboarding posture, home row hand placement and accurately key the space and enter bars, the letters: A,S,D,F,J,K,L,H,E,O,M,R,I,T,N,C. Art: The class will observe and illustrate a still life of geometric forms. The students were given a supply list with their class syllabus and should have these supplies, (or a note from a parent sent to me stating when to expect these supplies)at school to use by January 15.

Rhonda Boedeker Plan: G5 (1:36-3:00) & B4 (11:40-1:32)

Vocal: Students have taken a written test over basic music symbols and terminology. Students continue to sight-sing daily, practicing examples in the key of C Major that include steps, skips, and intervals of a fifth. In addition, students have been reading several new pieces of choral music.

RISE: Students will begin working on either their National History Day or Independent Study Projects next week. We will also be continuing our Extempore' curriculum which includes a daily quote (all from Italians), Yogi-isms (Yogi Berra's wacky use of the English language), and Ernie Eagle Words (advanced vocabulary). We will begin the Non Capisco lesson which means I don't understand in the Italian language. This lesson is the beginning of our focus on the Italian language itself. We will begin with Learn Italian: 150 Italian Phrases for Beginnners. In our Conflicts Curriculum next week our lesson is about conflicting information. The enduring understanding is-Understanding the positive and negative sides of conflicts may help people make better choices. The guiding questions for this lesson are-What is a random sample? How can data in a survey be skewed? Mrs. Bell , Conference Time: BLUE 5 (1:36-2:45)

6th/7th/8th Physical Education & Health: Students completed their third round of fitness testing this week and began their racket Sports unit. This unit includes: Badminton, Pickle-ball, and Table Tennis. Please remind students to bring clothes and tennis shoes for participation. 6th Grade Health Enrichment: Students have started Chapter 14 covering Tobacco and Alcohol use. Chapter 14 covers some very serious issues that one day the students will have to make a decisions about. The topics can lead to some serious discussions. Band: We will be back to working out of our Essential Elements Book as we dive into second semester, which will allow us to learn new concepts before starting music for our spring concert.
