693B Independent Project Week 6: Due May 10 (Tuesday class) or May 11 (Wednesday class) at 8:00 PM.

As with previous reports, you should document at least three hours of individual practice, divided among at least three days—please do not include time spent on class homework. Note that the total time may include not only new listening but also time for vocabulary reviewand reviewing previously used listening material. Think about what your objectives for that activity are: improve comprehension, improve retention (e.g., note taking), improve processing (understand faster speech), improve knowledge (e.g., build vocabulary), etc.

Please fill out the form below and return it to as an attachment bythe due date above for your group.Be sure to answer thefour questions at the bottom—you should look at them first to see what I’m going to ask about.

Independent Project Report #4: Fill in the information requested in the table below for each session.

Name: ______

Time and date: / Objectives: / Material: / Procedure: / Comments:

1. Based on the individual meeting and feedback from your previous report what is one thing you tried to do differently this week? How well did it work?

2. About what percent of your total independent study time do you think you spend on each of these? Approximations are OK, but this should add up to 100%.

___% Listening for meaning semi-intensively (going over material once or twice to get main ideas and some details, with some pausing, but possibly with subtitles; noticing a few new words or phrases)

___% Listening for meaning intensively (focusing on the whole piece or extended interesting or difficult parts to be sure you understood them thoroughly—often repeating several times while pausing and comparing with subtitles and/or transcript)

___% Listening and reviewing transcript to increase knowledge: (1) vocabulary learning during listening session; 2) practice/review outside of listening environment, i.e., just with word list; 3) recognizing and reflecting on grammatical structures encountered in subtitles or transcripts, etc.)

___% Listening to improve processing (dictation/transcription; oral dictation; shadowing; listening intensively with subtitles or transcript to identify reduced forms, linking, difficult accents, and so on--the goal here is to isolate individual sounds, words, and phrases whose meaning you think you’ve already determined).

Do you think this is a good balance for your objectives? Why or why not?

3. Have you tried using the speed control yet outside of the assigned material? If so, what does it seem to be useful for? (If not, try it and then answer the question—see Week 4 notes).
