9 Portuguese films at ICABerlinale

Portugal will be present at the 67th Edition of the European Film Market of Berlin, which runs between 9 and 17 February with a significant Portuguese presence that includes 9 films. On 11 February at 10 a.m. at the The Mirror (facing the MGB), Portugal will be presenting its new tax incentives system for making films in Portugal.

The Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual [Cinema and Audiovisual Institute] (ICA) will be responsible for Portugal’s exhibition stand located in Martin Gropius Bau, which will serve as the workplace for the Portuguese professionals working in the market, hosting meetings and gatherings, promoting and publicizing films, and holding other promotional activities.

Portugal’s participation in the 67th Edition of the Berlinale already includes 8 films, including 2 feature films, 4 short films and an animated short film. The Panorama section also features the films VAZANTE and SPELL REEL.

In parallel activities, Victoria Guerra is one of theShooting Stars of 2017.

Mário Patrocínio (producer and director) and Luís Campos (director) will be present at the Berlinale Talents, along with the project A Short Film for the Dead by Daniel Hui, Portugal/Singapore (medium length documentary).

Berlinale Talents is a campus for young film professionals. At Berlinale Talents, directors, producers and technicians participate in workshops, master classes, lectures and other training actions.

The European Film Market of Berlin takes place simultaneously with the International Film Festival of Berlin and is the first major film event of the year, during which contacts and business deals are made for the whole year.

The Berlin International Film Festival, one of the most important film festivals in the world, has published the name of the films that have been selected for its sections.

- COUP DE GRÂCEby Salomé Lamas;

- OS HUMORES ARTIFICIAISby Gabriel Abrantes;

- CIDADE PEQUENADiogo Costa Amarante.

Animated short film:

-ODD IS AN EGG/ODDis an egg that has been co-produced by Portuguese production company Sparkle Animation and Norwegian company Qvisten Animation, executively produced by Luís da Matta Almeida and Kristin Ulseth and will be premiered on 14 February in the German capital. It combines 3D animation with 2D. The 2D production (animation and colour), along with music,were the responsibility of Sparkle Animation. Fernando Mota composed the music and the main animation and colour team consisted of Filipa Gomes da Costa, Osvaldo Medina and Sara Naves.

Panorama Section:

- VAZANTEby Daniela Thomas is on the final Festival list and was produced by Portuguese company Ukbar Filmes and supported by ICA. VAZANTE explores solitude and relations between races and genders on the fringes of Colonial Brazil. Whites, blacks, natives and new arrivals from Africa suffer from the ills of incommunicability at a large plantation in the decadent diamond region of Minas Gerais. The story takes place at the start of the 19th century and the film is Daniela Thomas’ first solo project.

- SPELL REELby Filipa Césaris among the 43 films selected for Forum 2017: Realistic and Surreal. Filipa César will also participate in Forum Expanded: The Solid Image by Filipa César (Germany / Portugal) and Sana Na N’Hada (Guinea Bissau).
